For 16 years I've worked with people struggling with gut health issues and problematic weight loss.
One thing I noticed very early on was when gut health improved, weight loss often became easier.
Cravings settled down. Energy improved. Exercise felt easier. And people found it easier to stick to healthy habits. For all of these reasons- they finally started getting results.
Now, thanks to the explosion of research into GLP-1 and weight loss medications, we're starting to uncover some of the biological mechanisms that may explain it.
One particularly fascinating area of research suggests that excess hydrogen sulphide produced by certain gut microbes may interfere with the body's ability to produce GLP-1, a hormone involved in appetite regulation and blood sugar control.
Even more interesting?
Researchers believe this may occur through effects on the mitochondria, the energy-producing machinery within our cells.
While this research is still emerging, it reinforces something I've believed for a long time:
Weight loss isn't always just about calories, willpower, or discipline.
Sometimes the missing piece may be happening inside the gut.
