🤍 Herb’s Birth Story 🤍

On the morning of Monday April 20th, I was woken at 4am by some mid-level period-pain style cramping. I was 39 + 5 at this stage, however this kind of sensation, along with Braxton Hicks, had been showing up a lot throughout the pregnancy, so I didn’t think too much of it.

I got myself up, had a shower, made a coffee, and thought I would read my book in the quiet of the morning. I go to bed very early and tend to wake very early (although 4am is quite early, even for me!), so I am used to being up in these hours. The cramping was sporadic, perhaps every twenty minutes or so. They certainly made themselves known but were not painful, per se, just obvious.

Les woke around 5am and I said to him that I thought things might be happening. We’d had a few false alarms throughout the third trimester, but this already felt different. I was conscious this could be another fast labour, so I popped my final things in the hospital bag - toothbrush, skincare, snacks, the essentials! - and around 6am I made myself a big breakfast, two pieces of sourdough with peanut butter, coconut yoghurt, berry jam, and cinnamon. Pearl then woke up so I made her some breakfast and we ate together at the kitchen table.

Around 7am the cramping became stronger and more frequent, though again not what I would have called painful…

🥛 Lactation Protein Balls 💪🏻

This recipe really is for everyone (my whole family can attest!), however if you’re not currently breastfeeding I would exclude the brewers yeast. These contain traditional galactagogues, which are food, herbs or medications that increase breast milk production. In this recipe I’ve utilised rolled oats, flaxseed meal, and brewers yeast, which are common food galactagogues.

They include beautiful sources of plant-based protein, healthy fats, fibre, and omega-3s from flax and h**p seeds. The dark chocolate chips and goji berries add flair and flavour!

I usually make a double batch, eat a few and freeze most to save for my future self. I am eating 1-2 daily at the moment and they are just delicious.

🥣 Dry ingredients:

• ½ cup oats
• ⅓ cup flaxseed meal
• ¼ cup vanilla pea protein
• ¼ cup h**p seeds
• 1 tablespoon brewer’s yeast
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ½ teaspoon salt

🍯 Wet ingredients:

• ⅓ cup honey
• 1 cup almond butter
• ⅓ cup dark chocolate chips
• ¼ cup goji berries

⚙️ Method:

1. Blitz all dry ingredients in a food processor.
2. If your honey or almond butter has solidified, gently warm up on the stovetop. Once cool add into your dry ingredient mix.
3. Stir through the dark chocolate chips and goji berries.
4. Roll into balls and store in the fridge or freezer.

🌿 Herbie Leon 🦁

Born at 9.01am on 20•4•26. He arrived swiftly, safely, and substantial at 4.1kg! We are loving - and adjusting - to becoming a family of four, and living in the nocturnal hours 🌚

I’m very grateful for all of the support from those around me during pregnancy, labour and now postpartum. My love Les Sharpe III, Pammy Cave/Nanna Poom, the one and only Janine Blossomdoulacare, and the most wonderful midwifes Abby Birth Circle, Ruby, and Sam at Northern Beaches Hospital 🫶🏻

We are currently overwhelmed with love, and the size of the toddler tantrums. Accepting tips below 😅👇🏻

🥥 Nutrient dense trail mix 🍇

The ultimate, nostalgic snack mix of crunchy, sweet, and savoury! This is the ideal snack to keep in your bag or desk drawer.

This includes abundant healthy fats, protein from the nuts and seeds, antioxidants from the dried fruit and cacao, and the oh-so necessary addition of dark chocolate. I’ve made this to have during labour, and for postpartum days where I need a delicious and nutrient-dense snack at my fingertips.

I buy all of my ingredients from , or bulk foods shops such as , , or , so you can grab exactly the amounts you need.

In a big bowl, mix together:

• ⅓ cup almonds
• ⅓ cup roasted cashews
• ¼ cup Brazil nuts
• ¼ cup pumpkin seeds
• ¼ cup sunflower seeds
• ¼ cup cranberries
• ¼ cup sultanas
• ¼ cup dark choc chips (I use the 70% cacao ones from )
• ⅓ cup coconut flakes

Store in a glass jar or airtight container - lasts well for 2-3 months.

🍗 Slow Cooked Pulled Chicken Shawarma 🥗

I’ve really talked this recipe up so I hope you all love it as much as I do! It has the most beautiful flavours, is super easy, and makes excellent protein meal prep if that’s your thing 🍽️

⚡️ Ingredients ⚡️

• 1kg chicken (breast and thigh work well - I use a mix of both)
• 2 brown onions
• ¼ cup Greek yogurt
• 3-4 tbsp lemon juice
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 1½ tbsp ground cumin
• 1½ tbsp ground coriander
• 2 tbsp curry powder
• 2 tbsp paprika (I use smoked - sweet works too)
• 2 tsp turmeric
• 2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1½ tsp ground cardamom
• ½ tsp cloves
• ½ tsp nutmeg
• 2 tsp salt
• ½ tsp black pepper

⚡️ Method ⚡️

1. In a bowl, whisk together the yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, and all spices. Add the chicken breasts and coat well.
2. Leave to marinate for a few hours or overnight.
3. When ready to cook - preheat oven to 140°C fan forced.
4. Slice onions and place in the bottom of a large crock pot/dutch oven. Place the chicken on top and pour over all of the spice mix. Pop the lid on.
5. Bake for 3 hours, until the meat is tender and falling apart. Shred the chicken and mix with the onions and juices.

⚡️ Notes ⚡️

- Served here with basmati rice, a crispy bitter salad, pickled onions, and hummus
- Also delicious made into wraps! Add shredded lettuce/cabbage, pickles, and green tahini
- Lasts well so you can meal prep this in advance, or freeze into portions. I often double the recipe and freeze half for a rainy day
- If you like spice add 1 teaspoon chilli flakes or cayenne pepper
