Philip Armstrong will be discussing the National Standards for Counsellors and Psychotherapists in Australia and challenging some of the assumptions that have already begun to surround them.
The presentation will look closely at what the Standards actually are, what they are intended to achieve, and perhaps more importantly, what they are not.
Are they a regulatory framework?
Do they create a national registration system?
Do they determine who can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist?
And do they resolve the longstanding issues of accreditation, qualification standards, professional titles and recognition across the profession?
Philip will separate the published Standards from the claims, expectations and interpretations that have developed around them, and consider what still needs to occur before Australia can genuinely claim to have a nationally consistent framework for counselling and psychotherapy.
For practitioners, educators and professional bodies, this is an important conversation, because understanding the difference between standards, accreditation and regulation will be critical to understanding where the profession really stands.
