Many people think the answer to a phobia is finding enough reassurance that they finally feel certain. But certainty isn't something life can promise.

What treatment can help build is confidence - confidence that you can approach situations, respond effectively, and continue living your life, even when there are things you can't predict.

That shift in perspective is often where lasting change begins.

Phobias can feel overwhelming, especially when there’s no clear starting point.

Breaking the process down into steps tends to make it more manageable - and allows progress to build gradually over time.

This structured approach is what underpins our 5 Step Phobia Program.

We’ve started creating phobia-specific exposure therapy playlists on YouTube.

Finding appropriate videos can be difficult when you are already feeling anxious. Some are too intense. Some are not useful. Some are simply not well suited to the stage of exposure you are working through.

Our playlists are designed as a resource for people working through exposure therapy, ideally with guidance from a treating psychologist. Our current playlists include:

Fear of vomit
Fear of flying
Blood, injury and injection

We will continue building more over time. Please follow the link in the comments.

Exposure therapy works best when it is planned, graded, prolonged and repeated.

What phobia would you like us to curate next?

One of the most common things we hear is:
"I know it doesn't make sense."

That insight is actually incredibly common among people with phobias.

The challenge isn't a lack of logic - it's that the brain's automatic fear response has learned something different.

The encouraging news is that automatic responses can also learn something new.

Not every fear is a phobia. Fear is a normal, protective response that helps keep us safe when there's genuine danger.

A phobia is different. The same alarm system is activated in situations where the level of fear is out of proportion to the actual risk, and over time it can begin to affect thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.

Recognising the difference is important, because phobias are well understood - and with the right treatment, they can be worked through.

One of the biggest shifts people experience is realising that their brain isn't working against them.

The fear response is actually trying to protect them - it's just responding to the wrong situation.

Understanding this often replaces frustration with curiosity, and that's a much more productive place to begin.

A warm welcome to Ashley Lam, Clinical Psychologist, who has joined the Sydney Phobia Clinic team.

Ashley will be working across our phobia programs, supporting people of all ages as they work through established fear and anxiety responses.
She also brings experience in the delivery of the Cool Kids Anxiety Program, which supports children and adolescents to better understand anxiety and build practical skills for change.
Ashley takes a warm, collaborative and client-centred approach, drawing on evidence-based therapies including CBT, ACT, DBT and Schema Therapy.
Her work is grounded in helping clients feel understood, supported and more able to respond intentionally, rather than feeling shaped by fear, self-criticism or avoidance.
We’re so pleased to have Ashley as part of the clinic.

Welcome to the team, Ashley!

Many people assume confidence means never feeling anxious.

In reality, confidence is often the result of experiencing a situation and learning that you can handle this situation more effectively than you first believed.

That's an important distinction.

For many people with bridge phobia, the bridge isn't the only thing that becomes difficult. It's the freedom that's lost around it.

Changing routes may reduce anxiety in the moment, but over time it can make life smaller - affecting where you go, how long journeys take, and the confidence you have behind the wheel.

Using Virtual Reality, we can practise bridge crossings in a controlled clinical environment, allowing confidence to build before returning to real-world driving.

Zoophobia is more than simply not liking animals.

For many people, it can start to influence everyday life - affecting where they go, what they do, and how confident they feel in situations where animals might be present.

The good news is that zoophobia is a well-understood condition. Like other phobias, it follows recognisable patterns, which means it can be treated. With the right support, it's possible to reduce the fear and regain the confidence to enjoy everyday experiences again.
