Each time our community comes together for a group meditation, a familiar them emerges.
There is something different about sitting together in silence.
Many describe the experience as feeling especially quiet, deep and restful.
Some say their meditation seems to settle more easily.
Others leave feeling lighter, calmer and more connected.
Why might that be?
From a scientific perspective, research has shown that Transcendental Meditation is associated with increased EEG brain coherence—a sign of greater integration between different parts of the brain.
Some researchers have further observed that meditating together further enhances this coherence.
Maharishi offered a simple explanation.
He described consciousness as a field that underlies all individual minds.
When people meditate together, he suggested, we are not only experiencing greater inner silence ourselves, but also contributing to greater coherence in the collective.
Whether you understand it through neuroscience,
through Maharishi's understanding of consciousness,
or simply through your own experience,
there is something special about sharing silence.
two weeks ago, after our community meditation and potluck dinner, that feeling was once again unmistakable.
Perhaps some things are easier to understand not by explanation, but by experience.
