Chels • IBS & FODMAP Dietitian / Nutritionist] with Confused about what a FODMAP is? Read on. 👇🏼
FODMAP is an acronym, and it stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that are poorly absorbed by the body, resulting in abdominal pain and bloating.
There are six types of FODMAPs including:
➖ Fructose
➖ Sorbitol
➖ Mannitol
➖ Galacto-oligosaccharides
➖ Fructans
➖ Lactose
💡The most important thing to remember is that FODMAP-containing foods are not 'bad'. They are found in very healthy foods such as onions, apples, asparagus, mushrooms, peaches and milk.
For this reason, the low FODMAP diet should not be undertaken without the guidance of a trained professional.
