When AI Becomes the Therapist: What Are We Really Seeking? 🤖💻📊

When AI Becomes the Therapist: What Are We Really Seeking? “I go to AI for counselling,” she told me, completely seriously. There was no irony in her voice, no hesitation. She explained that AI felt unbiased, non-judgmental—safe. It gave her answers that helped her make sense of her problems. ...

Counselling is far more than the pathologising of distress, the collection of measurable outcomes, or the application of techniques. At its heart, counselling is a transformative and educative encounter concerned with the integration of the many dimensions of the human person.

Its purpose is not merely symptom reduction, but the fostering of wholeness, meaning, and human flourishing. In this sense, counselling resonates with Abraham Maslow's vision of self-actualisation and, ultimately, self-transcendence.

This understanding finds an echo in Magnifica Humanitas, which reminds us that every person possesses an inherent dignity and is called to fullness of life.

Counselling, therefore, is not simply about fixing what is broken. It is about accompanying persons on their journey towards becoming more fully human.

Perhaps this is why I have come to see counselling not merely as a profession, but as a ministry of presence, hope, and transformation.

The questions to ask ourselves:

Has education been hijacked?
Has it lost it moral compass?
Has education been betrayed?
Has corporatisation of education done more harm than good?

Let's not lose hope. Let us be the change we want to be.

Pope Leo XIV's encyclical Magnifica Humanitas and counselling in the age of AI.

5 takeaways:

1. The human person is at the heart of a therapeutic relationship.
2. Humans are relational and embodied.
3. Suffering has a meaning.
4. Ethics is core to a therapeutic relationship.
5. AI, psychological institutions or clinical frameworks serve the human person and not displace or instrumentalise them.

AI counselling - Tying yourself up in knots!! 😥😢😥

Growth can not take place in an artificial zone. AI counselling offers you a false sense of transformation, self- empowerment, or agency. It is dangerously deceptive. It is a trap because it perpetuates self-absorption or psychological stuckness while catering to your ego or your sense of self. You might as well speak to a mirror! You will feel good or possibly better for a while, but remain where you are in your head space.

Danger of AI counselling 🔥🔥🔥

AI counselling.

It listens without bias or judgement — sometimes I just need to talk.

But the conversation left me with bigger questions…
Is this a good thing or a worrying one? Ethical or complicated?

And maybe more importantly — what does it say about us?
About loneliness, social isolation, affordability, or the lack of support systems many of us experience in Western culture?

I'm curious how this sits with you.
