Moving into Supported Independent Living is one of the biggest milestones a family will go through together. It's exciting, it's emotional, and it's completely normal to feel both at once. Here's what we've learned helps families make the move smoother π
1. Start the conversation early, and keep it open. Talk about what independence actually looks like to them β their own room, choosing what's for dinner, having friends over, a quieter morning routine. The more they can picture it, the less daunting it feels.
2. Visit the home together. Walk through the space, meet the housemates and the support team, have a cuppa in the kitchen. Familiarity does a lot of the emotional heavy lifting before moving day.
3. Practise daily living skills now. Making a simple meal, doing a load of washing, managing a shopping list, setting an alarm. You don't need to master anything β the goal is confidence, not perfection.
4. Write down what makes them, them. Their routines, food likes and dislikes, sensory needs, what a good day looks like, what an off day looks like, and how they like to be supported when they're overwhelmed. This is gold for a new support team.
5. Pack the comfort items first. Their doona, their photos, their music, the mug they always use. A space starts feeling like home the moment familiar things are in it.
6. Take the transition slowly. Many families start with respite or short-term stays, then a few overnights, then the full move. There's no prize for rushing.
7. Plan how you'll stay connected. Set a rhythm for visits, calls and updates that works for everyone. Staying close doesn't stop when they move out β it just looks a little different.
8. Look after yourself too. Guilt, grief and relief often turn up at the same time. That doesn't mean you've made the wrong decision. It means you love them.
Save this for when you need it, and send it to a family member who's thinking about this step. If you'd like to talk it through with someone who does this every day, our team is always happy to chat β no pressure, no obligation.
