Specialist Intellectual Disability Health Teams are making a difference, but they are currently only available in 7 of NSW’s 15 Local Health Districts.

This means only a portion of the people who need this specialist support can access it.

Council for Intellectual Disability is calling on the NSW Government to fund a Specialist Intellectual Disability Health Team in every one of NSW’s 15 Local Health Districts.

Health outcomes for people with intellectual disability are well below those of the general population.

3DN at the UNSW Centre is researching autistic people's experiences of using mental health services in NSW.

We invite autistic people and supporters to join a 60–90 minute online focus group.

We will talk about what has worked well and how mental health services can better support autistic people.

The Census counts people in Australia.

It helps the government understand who lives in Australia and what people need.

This information is used to plan important services and supports, including disability and health supports.

It is important that information about people with intellectual disability and their supporters is included in the Census.

You can fill in the Census yourself or ask someone for help.

On 17 July, we hosted a special event to celebrate Emeritus Professor Helen Beange's 100th birthday.

Helen is a celebrated doctor, researcher and mentor in intellectual disability health. She was the first doctor in Australia to highlight the unmet health needs of people with intellectual disability.

Around 60 people from across Australia joined us to celebrate Helen and her incredible contribution.

Some of the highlights included:
- Tahli Hind, a lived experience researcher at the Centre, co-hosting the event

- A special address from Australia's Chief Medical Officer, Professor Michael Kidd AO

- Letters from theNSW Governor and the Governor-General of Australia thanking Helen for her work

- A heartfelt tribute video.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate Helen, her remarkable career and the lasting impact she has had on intellectual disability health. Most of all, it was a lot of fun.
