From sports broadcasts and events, to entertainment and public spaces like public transport and billboards. Kids and young people see marketing for gambling, alcohol and unhealthy food everywhere they turn.

In a new opinion piece for Croakey - Informed, engaged communities for health, our CEO Prof. Anna Peeters explores how we can build healthier environments, online and IRL, and protect future generations from harmful marketing.

The Last Generation To Grow Up Before The Food Experiment...
Their grandparents cooked food. Our grandchildren unwrap products.

There is a generation still alive today that remembers a very different food environment.

Breakfast wasn't a shelf full of colorful boxes.

Snacks weren't engineered by food scientists.

There were no energy drinks.
No protein bars.
No frozen breakfast sandwiches.
No giant walls of chips.

Food came from kitchens.

Not factories.

Most meals were made from ingredients that would have been recognizable to their great-grandparents.

Then something changed.

Over the next several decades, food became more convenient.

More portable.

More profitable.

And more processed.

Today, entire grocery store aisles are filled with products that didn't exist when our grandparents were young.

At the same time, obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, and chronic illness became increasingly common.

Was processed food the only factor?

Of course not.

But it may be one of the biggest lifestyle shifts in modern history.

Sometimes the most important question isn't:

"What should we eat?"

It's:

"What were people eating before all of this started?"

Think your body’s needs are complicated? Think again.

Water can be the key to your hidden symptoms — most of which are just dehydration in disguise.

Movement doesn't require a gym membership; a simple walk can do wonders.

Let's not forget the basics: real food, quality sleep, sunlight, and human connection.

These essentials aren’t just for survival. They're for thriving.

The ingredient label tells a bigger story than the front of the package.

When food needs a long list of additives, oils, colors, and flavor tricks, should people start trusting the back label more than the marketing?

Once you start reading ingredient labels, the grocery store looks completely different.

Is most of this really food anymore… or just packaged convenience made to look normal?
