Staying well this winter is all about the little habits that make a big difference ❄️

Prioritise sleep, nourish your body with warm and healthy meals, keep moving even on the colder days, drink plenty of water, and make time to slow down and recharge. Layer up, get some fresh air and sunshine when you can, and don’t forget to check in on the people around you too 🤍

Simple things like washing your hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when you’re unwell can help protect both you and your community during cold and flu season. And one of the best ways to stay protected this winter is by getting your flu vaccine — a small step that can make a big difference.

Be gentle with yourself this season, rest when you need to, and focus on keeping your mind and body well ✨

Even a light suntan shows that the skin has increased its production of melanin to protect itself. It means your skin is in distress; it’s your body’s warning sign.

The same goes for a base suntan; it does not provide protection. There is no such thing as a safe suntan. It is a sign that your skin has been damaged by UV.

UV radiation is invisible, but its effects are absolutely real. So, whether it’s sunny and baking hot, or cooler and cloudy outside, UV radiation can still damage your skin. In short, when the UV is 3 or over, you need to use all five forms of sun protection.

2026 INFLUENZA VACCINATIONS
— don’t wait to get caught out.

The flu vaccine is your best protection against serious illness this season, helping reduce symptoms, complications, and time off work or school. 💉

Protect yourself and those around you — especially young children, older adults, and anyone with underlying health conditions.

📅 Book your flu shot now and stay one step ahead this winter.

SLIP: Pack a cover up
Using sun protection isn’t just about being safe, you can be super cute with it too. The fashion industry is all over this so there are heaps of on-trend cover ups with serious style points.

SLOP: SPF50+, baby!
Keep your skin super soft and prevent premature ageing, wrinkles and other sun damage by using a quality broad spectrum sunscreen, with at least SPF50 or higher. This should be generously applied (slopped!) all over exposed skin… not just the face, please! But don’t worry, sunscreens aren’t what they used to be. They now come with non-greasy formulas that avoid that white cast and can be highly moisturising!

Apply 20 minutes before exposure so that it sets into the skin. You should use roughly a teaspoon per limb, and one for the back, chest and head, and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

SLAP: Grab a cute hat
Find a hat that works with your style, and you’ve got an outfit-maker. Ideally choose hats with a wide brim so you protect your face, neck and ears, since these can be common areas for skin cancers to develop.

SEEK: Stay in the shade
If you’re hitting the beach, choose a cool and shady spot under a tree, or pack a beach umbrella or cabana. Be aware that UV can reflect off the water and other surfaces, even in the shade, so wear SPF50+, a hat, sunnies and a cover up as well.

SLIDE: Sunnies don’t just look good…
A good pair of sunnies will also protect your face and eyes from the sun. Good sunnies together with a great hat, means you’re reducing your UV exposure by 98% to your head and eyes. Choose a pair of sunnies that wraparound and meet the Australian Standard AS/NSZ 1067.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis — and one of the leading causes of joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in adults.

It develops over time due to wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions your joints. In fact, more than 50% of people over 60 show signs of osteoarthritis on imaging — even if they don’t yet have symptoms.

✨ What does it feel like?
• Joint pain and stiffness (often worse with activity)
• Symptoms that improve with rest
• Reduced movement or flexibility
• Bony swelling or joint changes over time

⚠️ Risk factors include:
• Increasing age
• Being overweight
• Previous joint injury or trauma
• Family history

The good news? There are simple, effective ways to help manage symptoms and slow progression 👇

💪 Tips for healthy joints:
• Maintain a healthy weight (BMI 20–25)
• Stay active with low-impact exercise like walking or swimming
• Try physiotherapy (including hydrotherapy) to improve strength and posture
• Use heat packs to ease stiffness and discomfort
• Consider simple pain relief such as paracetamol
• Some people find benefit from supplements like glucosamine

Your joints carry you through life — looking after them now can make a big difference later.

If you’re noticing ongoing joint pain or stiffness, don’t ignore it. Early support can help you stay active and independent for longer.

👉 Book in with your GP to discuss your symptoms and create a personalised plan.

Book your Breast Check today!

Breast cancer can develop silently for years before you or your doctor notice any changes. By the time symptoms appear, it may already be well developed. That’s why regular screening is so important.

A mammogram can detect breast cancer before it can be felt, helping to find it earlier when treatment is often simpler and outcomes are better. Early detection truly saves lives.

In Australia, women aged 50–74 are encouraged to have a free mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Australia. The appointment only takes about 20 minutes, and it could make a life-saving difference.

A few things to remember:
• Most breast cancers occur in women over 50
• Many women with breast cancer have no symptoms at all
• Screening can detect cancers too small to feel
• Regular checks help catch changes as early as possible

Your future self will thank you for making your health a priority. If it’s been a while since your last screen — or you’ve never had one — consider booking today.

💗 Early detection saves lives.

What does your daily skincare routine look like?

Many of us spend a lot of effort on our skincare routines, but just 15 minutes in the sun, especially in summer when UV levels are higher for longer, can undermine the hard work you put into your skincare.

To protect against the damaging effects of UV, SPF is your skin’s best friend but it’s not a suit of armour. Adopting all 5 sun safe behaviours will not only help prevent skin cancers; it will also delay premature ageing and visible sun damage.

Sun damaged skin can show up as:
- Fine lines
- Leathery skin
- Sunspots
- Premature ageing
- Mole growth

Over time, exposure to UV (either by suntanning or incidental exposure) adds up and may leave you looking older than your years. A suntan may last a week, but skin damage is for life.

This week, we're talking about BACK PAIN.

85-90% of people will have back pain at some stage in life.

Most back pain cases are mechanical, meaning there is a disfunction of one of the vertebral joints, ligaments or muscular attachments in the back. There are also other structures which can cause back pain, such as pelvic disease and renal disease (e.g. kidney infection).

But don't worry, simple measures can be taken to manage back pain, including simple pain relief (e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen), warm compression (e.g. hot water pack), gentle mobilisation and stretches as tolerated, and anti-inflammatory rubs (e.g. dencorub, voltaren cream).

Physiotherapy can also have long-term benefits for ongoing back pain – come see us at Belmont Medical for more information!

At times, back pain requires more thorough investigation in order to excluse other causes.

Here are some IMPORTANT SIGNS & FACTORS to be aware of:
• Night time or early morning pain
• Sharp/stabbing pain
• Pain moving down the leg
• 50 years of age
• On regular corticosteroids/immunosuppressive medication
• Have a history of osteoporosis
• On anticoagulation (or blood thinner) medication

Headaches are a common experience and presentation to the GP. There are a variety of causes, however the most common being a tension-type headache.

We will go through a few typical features of headaches, particularly tension and migraine headaches.

Tension headaches typically feel "tight", "gripping", as though there is a band squeezing your head.
They usually affect both sides of the head, or can be generalised. These headaches typically last anywhere between 30 minutes up to 7 days, often occurring during times of stress. Usually rest, good hydration and simple pain relief, such as panadol or nurofen are advised.

Migraine headaches are generally one sided, often feeling "throbbing" or "pulsating".

There can be associated symptoms such as sensitivity looking at light, sensitivity with loud sounds and nausea/vomiting. For some people, there can be certain precipitating factors such as foods e.g. chocolate, alcohol and hormone changes. Often, there can be a family history of migraine headaches too. Several treatment options are available, but visit your GP for further information if you feel you have similar symptoms.

Please see your GP if your headache is persisting or not improving with simple pain relief such as panadol or nurofen, you have any visual disturbances, any weakness,
worsening of headache or high fevers with headache.
