MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS – LET’S BREAK THE STIGMA!

At Help on Wheels, we believe that mental health deserves the same care, attention and understanding as physical health.

When we experience physical health concerns, we seek medical advice. So why do we sometimes hesitate to check in on our mental wellbeing?

Mental health is an essential part of our overall health. Early signs such as stress, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope should never be ignored or judged. Sometimes, a simple conversation with a mental health professional can help us understand our feelings, develop coping strategies and feel supported.

Let’s break the stigma and change the conversation. Seeking support is not a weakness; it is a positive step towards wellbeing.

We are pleased to see initiatives such as the Sutherland Shire Council Mental Health Expo, which create opportunities for our community to learn, connect and better understand mental health.

At Help on Wheels, we are passionate about supporting people beyond their physical needs. We believe in compassionate, person-centred care that recognises the importance of emotional and mental wellbeing.

Let’s listen without judgement, support one another and create a community where everyone feels safe to ask for help.

A wonderful day at the Dementia Services Expo at Kirrawee Library+ for Dementia Action Week đź’š

Help on Wheels was proud to be part of a day dedicated to learning, connection and supporting people living with dementia, their families and carers.

A special thank you to Professor Peter Gonski and Dr Chris Poulos for sharing their expertise and valuable insights, and to Aunty Dolly for stopping by for a chat.

It was also wonderful meeting members of our local community and fellow service providers, and having so many meaningful conversations at the Help on Wheels stall.

Thank you to Sutherland Shire Libraries and the St George & Sutherland Shire Dementia Alliance for bringing our community together for such an important event. đź’šđź’›

Almost half a million Australians are living with dementia today and over 1.7 million people are involved in their care.

But we don’t talk about it enough, It can feel too hard to raise. We worry about saying the wrong thing. And it’s often wrongly seen as just a part of getting older.

But silence has a cost - delayed diagnoses and treatment, carers who feel isolated, and people who never learn that help is here.

When we talk about dementia, we can:

✔️Improve support and services for Australians
✔️mprove understanding of dementia
✔️Reduce stigma and discrimination

Today, we encourage our participants, families, carers, support workers and wider community to check in with the people around them, listen without judgement and make time for meaningful conversations.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, simply being there and listening can mean more than you realise. 💛

From all of us at Help on Wheels, remember to check in with others and with yourself.
