A timely reminder that good healthcare isn’t always about doing more.

Pain can understandably create fear and uncertainty, and it’s easy to assume that a scan, medication or more intensive intervention is the next step. But for many people with back pain, understanding what’s happening, staying appropriately active and gradually rebuilding confidence and capacity may be far more valuable.

The goal isn’t to ignore pain ... it’s to understand it in context.

As clinicians, perhaps one of our most important roles is knowing when further investigation is genuinely warranted, and when reassurance, education, movement and progressive rehabilitation are the better medicine.

A really interesting perspective on a condition that affects so many people.

Representing Australia at Gay Games Valencia 2026 has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. 🇦🇺🏳️‍🌈

This was my first time travelling overseas to compete at an international sporting event, and it reminded me why sport has such a unique ability to bring people together. Standing alongside the Australian team, surrounded by people from different backgrounds, sports and stories, is something I’ll never forget.

I was incredibly proud to compete across multiple track and field events, earning Silver medals in the 200m Sprint, Mixed Relay and Shot Put, and Bronze medals in both Javelin and Discus.

More than the medals themselves, I was proud to step outside my comfort zone and challenge myself. What I’ll remember most, however, is the sense of community, encouragement and genuine connection that existed both on and off the track.

As a sports podiatrist and strength & conditioning coach, I spend my professional life helping others move, recover and perform. Being on the other side, as an athlete, was a powerful reminder of the dedication, vulnerability and courage it takes to step onto the field and simply give your best.

A heartfelt thank you to my Australian teammates, Gay Games, International Front Runners, the volunteers, officials and everyone who made the Games such a welcoming and inclusive celebration of sport.

I’m returning home with wonderful memories, new friendships, renewed motivation, and an even greater appreciation for the power of sport to connect people across cultures and communities.

Here’s to continuing to challenge ourselves, supporting one another, and never stop growing.

Something I see very commonly in clinic … a sports podiatrist’s delight (for me… not for you 😅).

One of the earliest signs people notice is that sharp discomfort with the first few steps in the morning.

It’s often not just “tight calves.”

What’s usually happening is the plantar fascia stiffens slightly overnight,
and that first step loads it quickly, that’s where the pain comes from.

Common pattern:
• Pain with first steps out of bed
• Eases a bit as you move
• Can come back with longer walking or standing

Early on, it tends to respond well when you:
• Adjust load (don’t push through it)
• Wear supportive footwear during the day
• Gradually rebuild strength and capacity

If it lingers or keeps coming back, it’s worth getting it checked! These are much easier to manage early than when they become stubborn.

Good luck to everyone running the half this weekend 👏

Big effort getting to the start line … hope you all have a great run and enjoy the day out there!

Looking forward to seeing how everyone pulls up over the next few days.

Tight hip flexors in runners are common … but stretching alone usually doesn’t fix it.

In many cases, it’s actually a load distribution issue between the hip flexors and the glutes during running.

So the tightness keeps coming back.

Here are 3 simple exercises I commonly use in clinic:
• Hip flexor stretch (with control)
• Glute bridge
• Hip extension control

The goal isn’t just to stretch, it’s to improve how the load is shared through your body when you run.

If this is something you deal with regularly, it’s worth getting your running mechanics assessed so you’re not just chasing symptoms.

Save this if you’re always stretching your hip flexors after runs.

Over the weekend, I attended a workshop with Stuart McMillan (Olympic sprint coach with ALTIS) on sprint performance and systems thinking.

What stood out most was the systems-based approach. Performance isn’t driven by one isolated quality, but by how all components interact under load.

In practice, this showed up clearly through:
• hip extension
• hip flexion
• foot-to-ground interaction
• spinal engine

And just as importantly, how we think about constraints:
• capacity
• capability
• coordination

A reminder that most performance or injury issues aren’t about one “weak link”, but about how the system adapts and self-organises into the most efficient strategy available under current constraints.

I also took from it that performance isn’t about chasing perfection in one area; it’s about maintaining a consistently high level across all areas so the system stays stable and functional.

This aligns closely with my work as a sports podiatrist, using soft tissue therapy, strength and conditioning principles, and clinical reasoning to better understand how the body adapts, compensates, and restores balance. Particularly in the context of injury.

Always valuable stepping outside your own field and seeing familiar patterns through a different lens.

Thank you ASCA for hosting a great workshop at the Sydney Rabbitohs headquarters.
