As a mum of two, Clinical Director, and small business owner, no two weeks ever look quite the same.

Some days are spent providing clinical supervision, reviewing programs, collaborating with families and other professionals, and researching best practice. Other days involve payroll, budgeting, compliance, and all the behind the scenes work required to keep a small business running 🦋

Much of this work isn't visible to families, but it plays an important role in ensuring we can continue delivering safe, effective, and evidence based support to the children and families we work with.

Everything we do comes back to the same goal:
Helping children build meaningful skills, greater independence, and confidence in everyday life.

"We've tried reward charts. They don't work."
It's a phrase we hear often from parents who have genuinely tried everything they can think of to support their child.

The reality is that reward charts aren't usually ineffective because they're reward charts. More often, they're missing some key ingredients.

✔ Is the reward actually motivating?
✔ Is your child experiencing success often enough?
✔ Is the goal clear, specific, and achievable?
✔ Is everyone responding consistently?
✔ Is positive attention being given alongside the reward?

Reward systems aren't about bribing children. They're about helping children learn, practise, and repeat skills that are important for their independence and success.

When implemented thoughtfully, reward systems can be a really effective way to help children learn what to do rather than focusing on what not to do. They can support everything from getting dressed in the morning and completing homework to following routines, building independence, and developing positive behaviours that make daily life easier for the whole family.

If you've tried reward charts before and they haven't worked, it doesn't necessarily mean reward systems aren't right for your child. Sometimes a few small adjustments can make a big difference.

At Mosaic, we talk a lot about supporting children to feel happy, relaxed and engaged… but what does that actually mean? 🦋

For us, it means building skills in ways that feel safe, meaningful and individual to each child. 🍃

We want children to feel seen. Families to feel heard and supported. And therapy to feel like something that adds to life, not something children need to “get through”. 🩵

We know conversations around therapy, neurodiversity and ABA can feel emotional, complex and deeply personal for many families.

At Mosaic, we believe it’s important to listen to lived experiences, continue reflecting on our practice, and create space for respectful, nuanced conversations about what ethical, child-centred support should look like today.

Our focus will always be on supporting children in ways that are meaningful, compassionate, evidence-informed, and individualised to who they are as a person 🦋

Welcoming Steph back to Mosaic 🦋

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming back Stephanie Valaris, now a Speech and Language Pathologist and founder of Little Wonders Speech Therapy, to deliver professional development to our team.

Steph was part of Mosaic in the early days as a Behaviour Therapist while completing her studies, so it was incredibly special to have her return and share her knowledge with us in her current role.

The session focused on emerging perspectives in language development, alongside practical ways our team can continue to support communication within everyday therapy sessions. This included strategies grounded in play, connection, and responsive interaction, ensuring we’re creating opportunities for children to build communication in ways that feel meaningful and natural.

Importantly, this was about strengthening collaboration across disciplines and ensuring our team is equipped to support communication goals alongside the incredible work of Speech Pathologists.

We’re so grateful to Steph for sharing her time and expertise, and we love seeing past team members thriving in their fields 🩵

The long term impact of early intervention 🌱

At Mosaic, we often talk about supporting children in the here and now, helping them feel happy, relaxed and engaged in their everyday environments 🩵

But early intervention goes far beyond short term progress.

It can shape a child’s development over time, supporting communication, independence, confidence, and meaningful participation in daily life.

When the right supports are introduced early, we often see:
✔️ stronger foundational skill development
✔️ improved generalisation across environments
✔️ reduced long term barriers to learning and participation

At Mosaic, our approach is always individualised and family-centred, because every child’s journey is unique 🦋

Farewell Alyssa 🩵👋

Over the past 3+ years, Alyssa has been such a valued part of the Mosaic team, growing alongside us while completing her studies and supporting so many of the children and families we work with.

Alyssa has now stepped into her next chapter as a Provisional Psychologist, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We are so grateful for the commitment, kindness, and compassion she brought to every session. The impact she’s had on our families and team will truly be felt.

While we will miss her at Mosaic, we’re so excited to see her continue to follow her passion and make a difference in the field of psychology.
