Beyond the Essential Oil

An essential oil is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of another stage: transforming carefully selected ingredients into a considered cosmetic formulation.

My experience producing essential oils has taught me to look beyond the bottle — to understand the plant, the raw material and the process behind each ingredient.

Today, through my studies in Cosmetic Formulation, Dermal Science and Chemistry at AACDS in Australia, I am deepening my knowledge of how ingredients work together, and how formulation, preservation and stability contribute to the quality of a finished cosmetic product.

For BARTARÔMES, authenticity means more than a botanical origin. It means understanding the ingredients and applying knowledge and care at every stage, from the plant to the finished formulation.

This is the next chapter of BARTARÔMES: bringing years of practical experience together with contemporary cosmetic science, with the long-term goal of establishing our own formulation laboratory in Australia.

From the plant to the finished formulation.

When Experience Meets Knowledge
In 2001, I undertook professional training in aromatherapy at L’École Lyonnaise des Plantes Médicinales, qualifying as a Conseiller en aromathérapie. That same year, I established BARTARÔMES in Morocco.
I wanted to challenge what I had learned from my early mentor, test my practical knowledge against established learning, and deepen my understanding of essential oils. The experience confirmed many of my foundations while opening new avenues for research and discovery.
Producing my own essential oils brought me closer to the entire process, from the plant to the finished oil.
Today, in Australia, I am continuing that journey through cosmetic formulation, dermal science and chemistry.
Established in 2001. Inspired by experience. Continuing through science.

In Arabic, we call it " روح" its essence, its soul. In French, the same oil is called an huile essentielle — une “essence”, an essence. In English, we use the same concept: essential oil/Essence.
It is more than an interesting coincidence of language. Across these expressions, the word “essential” points towards the same profound idea: the essence of something — what lies at its very heart, its essential nature, its Soul, Âme, روح.
Perhaps this is why the language of essential oils has always carried a meaning deeper than fragrance alone: we speak of the essence of the plant, while the Arabic word روح also speaks of the essence — the soul —

Why I Chose to Produce My Own Essential Oils
Early in my journey with aromatherapy, I was given advice that would profoundly influence the way I worked: produce your own essential oils.
At the time, I understood this as a practical discipline. With experience, I came to understand it as something far more fundamental.
Working from the plant itself teaches you to look beyond the bottle.
Which botanical species are you working with?
Where did it grow?
How was it harvested?
At what stage was it transformed?
How was the oil extracted?
What can its composition tell you?
How has it been stored?
These are not simply technical details. They are part of understanding the material with which you are working.
Producing my own oils gave me a direct appreciation of the relationship between the plant, its environment, the method of extraction and the resulting oil. It also taught me to question provenance and authenticity rather than relying solely on a name or a label.
That principle has remained with me throughout my work.
Today, as I continue my formal studies in Cosmetic Formulation, Dermal Science and Chemistry in Australia, I am bringing that practical foundation into a more developed scientific framework.
For me, this is the natural progression of the work.
Experience teaches you to observe.
Science teaches you to understand.
Good formulation requires both.
This is part of the foundation on which I am now developing the next chapter of BARTARÔMES in Australia.

Why I am returning to study? 🤔

I am returning to formal study in Cosmetic Formulation, Dermal Science & Chemistry through the Australian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science (AACDS), as an important step in preparing Bartarômes for its next chapter in Australia.
For me, this is about more than gaining another qualification. It is about bringing scientific knowledge and decades of practical experience together and establishing a stronger foundation for Bartarômes to develop its own formulations and, ultimately, its own formulation laboratory.
From the beginning of my aromatherapy journey, my mentor encouraged me to produce my own essential oils. That became a crucial lesson in authenticity.
Working from the plant itself made me understand how much origin, botanical identity, harvesting, extraction, composition and storage can influence the quality and character of an essential oil. It also taught me why relying blindly on oils of uncertain authenticity can compromise the quality and consistency of a formulation.
This is why control over the journey—from plant to oil, from oil to formulation—has always been important to Bartarômes.
Today, I am taking that philosophy further through formal study.
Experience gave me the foundation.
Study gives me deeper scientific understanding.
Bartarômes brings them together.

BARTARÔMES
In 2001, I created and established BARTARÔMES.
The brand developed specialist botanical and essential-oil preparations, with products made with the involvement of pharmacists. It grew beyond Morocco and reached France.
Then life changed.
Australia became home, and Bartarômes stepped away from the market. But the work itself never really stopped. The research continued. The plants continued to fascinate me. Formulation remained a world I could not simply leave behind.
Now, with years of experience, greater knowledge and the perspective that comes with maturity, I feel the need to share again.
So I am returning to formal study, deepening my knowledge of formulation and preparing Bartarômes for its next chapter in Australia.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR BARTARÔMES
If you are new here, let me introduce myself.
My relationship with aromatherapy, essential-oil production and their therapeutic use began in 1999, through an encounter that opened the door to a world I have continued exploring ever since.
My mentor's first and most important recommendation to me was simple: learn to make your own essential oils.
That advice changed the way I looked at the entire field.
Producing an oil myself meant learning to pay attention to the plant from the beginning—the botanical material, its origin, harvesting, preparation, extraction and the character of the resulting oil. It also made me realise something that has stayed with me throughout my work: authenticity matters enormously.
The essential-oil world is complex. Oils sold under the same name can differ considerably in origin, extraction, composition and quality. When the oil itself is not authentic or properly characterised, the experience and results one obtains from it can be profoundly different.
This is why I became fascinated not only by using essential oils, but by producing them.
Over the years, I worked with a wide variety of plants and essential oils, developing practical knowledge of extraction, preparation, application and formulation. My interest extended from traditional uses to understanding the chemistry and properties that might help explain them.
My journey also brought me into conversations and exchanges with pharmacists, doctors, nurses, mental-health professionals and specialists working with plants and their natural environments. I immersed myself in the botanical heritage of Morocco, including the remarkable plants of the Atlas Mountains and the knowledge preserved through Amazigh traditions.
I wanted to understand more—not simply accept what I was told.
That curiosity led me to formal aromatherapy study with L'École Lyonnaise des Plantes Médicinales, followed by many years of independent research, experimentation and professional discussion.
