Like so many locals, I’ve been thinking a lot about the recent shark attack at Coogee.

As someone who lives here, and spends a lot of time in Coogee waters both an ocean swimmer and volunteer lifesaver with Coogee SLSC, this one has hit close to home.

My thoughts are with Leah Stewart, her family and friends, and everyone impacted. Behind every headline is a real person and people who love them.

I want to give thanks to the heroic efforts of Charlie Verco and other first responders who responded so quickly. In incredibly difficult circumstances, stepped forward without hesitation.

Coogee is a tight-knit community, and it’s been heartening to see everyone rally around each other during a difficult time. For many of us the ocean is where we find self-care a little peace.
