For children affected by family violence, feelings aren’t always easy to name. They may show up through behaviour, silence, worry, anger, fear, sadness or overwhelm. Creative modalities give children another way in. Through drawing, play, colour, storytelling and making, children can begin to express what they feel, build a sense of safety and name emotions in ways that feel manageable.
These school holidays, our expressive therapist Liz has been running creative workshops with children connected to a local women’s shelter, using activities designed to support emotional expression, connection and regulation.
Around 60% of the families KidsXpress supports have been impacted by family violence, and we work closely with local DFV services and interagency networks to help children and families access support when they need it.
Sometimes healing starts with words. Sometimes it starts with colour, glue, paper, feathers, monsters, feelings bottles and a safe adult beside you.
