Hills Speech and Learning Centre’s speech pathology service assists children of all ages and abilities in developing their communication and academic skills. We are registered to provide support for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants. Our high-quality intervention programs are evidence-based and stem from the latest research, and can be tailored to suit the specific needs of

your child. We believe that families are the centre of a child’s world and can be empowered to support their children—hence, we deliver individualised services to support families in participating in all aspects of their child’s therapy to achieve positive outcomes. We provide individual, peer and group-based intervention services which suit children with a range of different abilities and needs. In addition, we offer training in the form of informative and hands-on workshops to those wishing to up-skill their staff or community. Our services are available throughout the week from Monday to Saturday. Our waiting times are also kept to a minimum, so you won’t be put on a waiting list and forgotten!

Social skills are more than just talking! They include taking turns, understanding body language, starting conversations, listening to others, and building friendships. These skills develop over time and can be supported through play, practice, and positive interactions. Every child learns at their own pace, and small steps can lead to big gains in confidence and connection.

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week.

This year’s theme, All In, is a reminder that reconciliation requires ongoing action, learning and commitment from all of us.

For speech pathologists, reconciliation means more than awareness. It means listening, building genuine partnerships, respecting language and culture, and supporting culturally safe and responsive practice.

At Speech Pathology Australia, we continue to support this work through initiatives including our Reconciliation Action Plan, First Nations Lead role, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee, cultural capability resources and learning opportunities that help strengthen understanding across the profession.

As we move through National Reconciliation Week and toward Mabo Day on 3 June, we encourage members to take time to reflect on the histories, cultures and communities that shape the places we live and work.

This week may be an opportunity to reflect on questions such as:
• What does reconciliation mean in my practice and everyday life?
• Whose Country am I on, and what is the history of this place?
• How can I support culturally safe and responsive communication practices?
• What meaningful action can I take beyond this week?

Reconciliation is something we all have a role in. Learn more about SPA’s commitment to reconciliation and culturally responsive practice: https://bit.ly/4f1qGxI

Play is really powerful.
We had so much fun last week learning through play such as building communication skills, turn-taking, problem-solving, and lots of laughter along the way! From board games to imaginative play, every activity was packed with opportunities to support speech and language development.

Today we pause to reflect on ANZAC Day and what it means for our families.
For young children, this day can be a little confusing. You might notice questions about why people wear poppies, attend dawn services, or talk about soldiers. That’s a great opportunity to gently explain in simple terms.

• Use clear, simple language
• Follow your child’s lead with questions
• Reassure them that they are safe
• Share stories about bravery, helping others, and kindness

It’s okay if children don’t fully understand this. What matters most is helping them feel secure while introducing the idea of remembrance in an age-appropriate way.
Lest we forget 🌺

Wishing you a relaxing Easter break and well-deserved downtime!
Simple speech tip:
Turn everyday moments into language opportunities - while driving, shopping, or cooking, describe what you’re doing and encourage your child to join in with words or short phrases. Small, consistent chats make a big difference!
