A fellow dietitian is currently in the process of recruitment for a study involving interviewing parents of fussy eating children with neurodivergent conditions such as autism to support his PhD research. If you have a neurodivergent child and are interested in participating, please scan the QR code.

The aim of the study is to analyse common themes, patterns and experiences of parents raising neurodivergent children who have been identified as a fussy eater. The study consists of an interview (around 20-30 minutes) and a survey, participants are asked to complete both the interview and the survey but can opt out at any point (data is not kept in this case).

To participate, a parent would scan the QR code on the attached flyer and be taken to the Qualtrics page with an embedded EOI and consent form. From here, the parent would provide their email and then would be sent the survey and book a time for the interview with the research dietitian, Josh Schiller. Josh is understanding of how precious time is for families, and the study has been designed to respect this.

We are feeling good at Bowral Nutrition and Wollondilly Dietitian because our dietitian, Adriana, is now working full time with us! Adriana brings her knowledge and experience as a dietitian with a keen interest in complex adults, enteral nutrition, and eating disorders. Adriana is also building her knowledge and skills to support complex paediatric caseloads, putting her recent certification in Responsive Feeding Therapy into practice.

Adriana will be providing dietetic services across the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Shires and has immediate availability to provide face-to-face, home visit, and telehealth dietetic services across both Shires.

As Adriana joins us full time, we also be saying good-bye to our complex paediatric dietitian, Vidalia, for the next year as she begins her maternity leave at the end of August.

The team is excited for this change and wish Adriana and Vidalia the best of luck! 🍀

Last month, our dietitians were pleased to attend a professional development event at The Gibraltar Bowral presented by Associate Professor Ahmad Alrubaie, Dr Elizabeth O'Brien, and Dr Harry Crane.

The topic of discussion was one of our favourites, gastrointestinal (gut) conditions, particularly looking at Inflammatory Bowel Disease and what the current evidence says about how it can be managed from a medical and nutrition perspective. Not only do we use these opportunities to learn but also network with local medical and allied health professionals including general practitioners, gastroenterologists, clinical nurses, and other dietitians so we can ensure our referral pathways are trusted and reputable for our client's care.

⚖️A higher weight can be protective for older adults.

Yes, you read that correctly. As we age, our bodies change, with many finding it easier to put on weight which can be due to a number of reasons. For most older people, this extra weight can actually provide support during times of illness, reduced mobility, or injury (i.e. after a fall). This is because our appetite reduces, food intake reduces, we are less active, and likely have increase energy (calorie) requirements per day in order to recover. This is where the extra weight can provide support as the body will use this for energy.

In the case of someone already being frail and not carrying extra weight, risk of malnutrition becomes great sooner as the body has less stores to work with, thereby using muscle stores. This is not what we want.

Now this doesn't mean you don't have to engage in healthy eating and daily movement, it just means focussing on weight loss at an older age may not be supportive of health at an older age.

If you or a loved one feel you need support around weight or eating behaviours (at any age), contact our office on 0492 970 379, so we can provide individualised care to suit your lifestyle and goals.

Last Wednesday (15th July) our Director and Principal Dietitian, Fofe, had the privilege of presenting to the wonderful members of the Moss Value Combined Probus Club (Probus - Fun and Friendship in Retirement) on the topic of Bone Health After 50. Despite Fofe having no voice on the day and relying on the Microsoft ClipChamp speech-to-text feature, the event was a success and members engaged enthusiastically throughout the presentation and during question time.

Conversations centred on the importance of essential bone health nutrients, foods containing these nutrients, and how much you should be aiming for. The role of Accredited Practising Dietitians in this space was also highlighted, so you know who to trust with your health, especially if you have any medical conditions.

An attendee and past client of Fofe's kindly presented her with a handwritten note with her thanks. We love the time and care it takes to handwrite a thank you note and truly appreciate these gestures from those we support.

If your organisation or workplace would like a nutrition expert to present on bone health or any other nutrition topic, contact us at [email protected]

🥛 Raw vs Pasteurised Milk: What’s the Real Difference?
There’s a lot of chatter online about raw milk being “natural” or “better for you”, but the science tells a very different story.
Pasteurised milk gives you all the nutrition, without the risk.

🌟 Why pasteurised milk is the safer choice
Pasteurisation simply heats milk for a few seconds to remove harmful bacteria and viruses. It doesn’t strip nutrients such as protein, calcium, healthy fats and most vitamins stay the same. In fact, pasteurised milk is often fortified with vitamin D, making it even more beneficial.

⚠️ What raw milk can contain
Raw milk can carry dangerous pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and even bird flu virus particles. These can cause severe illness, especially in:
• young children
• pregnant individuals
• older adults
• people with weakened immune systems
Raw milk advocates often claim it helps with digestion, allergies or immunity, but research shows these benefits aren’t supported by evidence.

The overall recommendation: choose pasteurised milk, i.e. any milk from the supermarket.

💩 What Your Poo Can Tell You About Your Health
It’s a topic most people try to avoid… but your poo is actually one of the easiest ways to check in on your gut health. Before you flush, a quick look can give you clues about how your body is doing.

🌈 Colour, shape and texture matter
Your stool can reveal things like:
• whether you’re drinking enough water
• if you’re eating enough fibre
• stress levels
• food intolerances
• how well you’re absorbing nutrients
• whether certain medications are affecting your gut
• signs of infection or inflammation
• When it's time to seek support from your GP and a dietitian

🟫 What a healthy poo looks like
A healthy stool is:
• light to dark brown
• smooth, sausage‑shaped - type 3-4 on the Bristol Stool Chart
• easy to pass (no straining)
• opening daily approximately 1-3x

⚠️ When things look “off”
Changes in colour or texture can signal different issues:
• Black: iron supplements or undigested food
• Pale/clay: possible pancreas or bile issues
• Yellow/green: stress, parasites or high‑fat diet
• Red: blood or simply beetroot
• Hard/lumpy: constipation or dehydration
• Loose/watery: diarrhoea, IBS, stress or certain foods

🩺 When to see your doctor
Check in with your GP if you notice:
• diarrhoea or constipation lasting more than 2-3 days
• black, tarry stools
• very pale or grey stools
• blood in your poo

It is important to seek medical support for your bowels, not Doctor Google. This is because many digestive issues can present similarly, and improper investigation can be lead to further complications.

✨ Where do dietitians play a role in gut health?
Dietitians work with medical practitioners to ensure all possible causes of gastrointestinal symptoms are ruled out for a proper diagnosis. As food and food behaviours play a massive role in our digestion (because food has to go through it), dietitians are vital for safe and appropriate management of digestive conditions and symptoms.

If you are looking to improve your gut health, we'd love to support you!

Last month, two of our dietitians joined a forum hosted by the South Western Sydney Public Health Network in Bowral. Collaborating with fellow allied health professionals to support local children is at the heart of what we do, which perfectly aligns with this year’s Dietitians Week theme: celebrating our collective impact! 💙 Dietitians Australia
