We are so very proud of Kate Dunn our Mid Coast Community Connector who has exceeded our wildest expectations in the role of connecting new health and other essential service workers and their families to the region. The Mid Coast can thank Kate for helping to ensure that these services are available to you, when you need them. Kate deserves every recognition. Thank you Tanya Thompson MP.

💛 COMMUNITY RECOGNITION- KATE DUNN

It was a real privilege to personally present a Community Recognition Statement to Kate Dunn today following her recognition in the NSW Parliament this week.

🫶 Kate has become one of the quiet achievers of our region through her work as the Mid Coast Community Connector, helping professionals and their families relocate, settle in and build a life here on the Mid Coast. Through her dedication, warmth and genuine care for people, she has helped attract and retain doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, engineers and many other skilled workers our communities desperately need.

What makes Kate’s work so special is that it goes far beyond finding someone a place to live or helping them navigate a move. She helps people feel connected, welcomed and part of our community from day one. Strong communities are built by people who quietly get on with the job of helping others, and Kate is exactly that person.

Congratulations Kate. Thank you for everything you do for our region. It was wonderful to be able to recognise your contribution in Parliament and then present that recognition to you in person today ❤️

Allied Health providers encouraged to host student placements

UNE Partnerships is inviting allied health organisations across the PHN region to become host employers for senior school students completing the HLT33021 Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance. By offering real world work placements to Year 11 and 12 students, local businesses play a vital role in bridging the gap between study and practice, while helping develop confident, job ready allied health assistants. Host employers will gain fresh energy in their teams, support local schools, and make a meaningful contribution to strengthening the future of the allied health workforce and community wellbeing.

Stop trying to fix workforce shortages. Start fixing the system.

This was our message at SEGRA: Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia Summit last week in Lithgow.

Workforce shortages are not a supply issue - they are a symptom of disconnected systems. A signal that housing, employment, services and community are not aligned to support people to live and stay in a place.

On the Mid Coast, this has led to a different response:

- From workforce shortages → workforce ecosystems
- From recruitment → retention, belonging and participation
- From isolated action → coordinated, place-based effort

This means working at the level of people’s lives, not just jobs, and recognising that it takes a community, not an organisation, to hold a workforce.

A whole-of-person approach, enabled by a whole-of-community response.

Over three years, this has supported:

➡️ 300 professionals relocating
➡️ 650+ people, including families, settling in the Mid Coast

Kate Dunn and Bree Katsamangos are very grateful to have had the opportunity to share our learnings and experience, and to learn from the dynamic work of others across the regional economic development space.

We would like to acknowledge the work of Cath Cosgrave (PhD) in helping to shape our community response.
