The start of a new school term can bring a mix of emotions.

Excitement.
Nervousness.
Relief.
Resistance.

Sometimes all before 8:30 am.

After more than 20 years working with children and young people, one thing I’ve learnt is that a difficult start to the term doesn’t predict how the rest of the term will go.

For many young people, returning to routines after the holidays simply takes time.

If your teen seems flat, grumpy or reluctant next week, try to see it as an adjustment rather than a problem to solve.

Connection matters more than perfection.

A calm conversation.
A little extra patience.
A reminder that they’re capable, even when they don’t feel like it.

Those small moments often have the biggest impact.

If this post helped, save it for the first few weeks of term and share it with another parent who might need the reminder too. 💚

Every now and then, a conversation changes the course of your life.

This was one of mine...

Last year I was walking into the supermarket when a parent stopped me.

She had already left.

Then she turned around, came back into the store and found me.

She said,

“I had to come back because I needed to tell you how amazing you are. You literally changed the trajectory of my son’s life. He is a better person because of you.”

I don’t share this because I need people to think I’m amazing.

I share it because that conversation changed something in me.

It made me realise that the support I’d been giving children and families inside schools didn’t have to stay inside schools.

Thrive grew from a simple hope.

That more children could feel understood.

That more parents could feel supported.

And that together, we could spend a little less time asking,

“How do I stop this behaviour?”
..and a little more time asking,

“What might my child be trying to tell me?”

That’s still the heart of Thrive today.

Sometimes the hardest part of parenting isn’t the sleepless nights.

It’s the invisible load.

Remembering appointments.
Packing lunches.
Managing everyone’s emotions.
Making decisions all day long.
Worrying about things no one else sees.

It’s carrying so much for the people you love that, by the end of the day, there’s very little left for yourself.

If you’re feeling exhausted, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

It means you’ve been carrying a lot.

So this is your reminder today...

💚 You’re allowed to be tired, too.

You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to pretend it’s easy.
And you certainly don’t have to be perfect.

I hope you find a few moments to breathe today.

💬 What’s one small thing that helps you refill your own cup, even if it’s just for five minutes?

I’d love to hear your ideas. You never know when your suggestion might be exactly what another parent needs today. 💚

Helping Your Child Navigate Big Feelings - A practical guide for parents

Big feelings can feel overwhelming for children, and for the adults loving them through it, too. When your child is melting down, shutting down, or coming apart after holding it together all day, it’s hard to know what to do, and even harder to know what to say.

This gentle guide is here to change that. It offers understanding, reassurance, and simple, practical strategies to help you support your child with more calm, connection, and confidence, without needing to be perfect or have all the answers.

Grounded in a calm-first, trauma-informed approach, it’s written for parents, carers, and anyone who wants to show up steadier in the hard moments.

Inside, you’ll find:

*Understanding Big Feelings so you can see what your child is really trying to communicate
* What Children Need Most, the difference safety, connection, and co-regulation make before any “fixing” begins
* Practical Strategies to help your child calm, reset, and feel safe
* What To Say Instead: gentle words that help and connect rather than escalate or shut down
* Permission To Be Human, a reminder that you don’t have to be perfect to be the parent your child needs
* Repair and Reconnect: How to come back together after the storm
* When To Seek Support, knowing when a little extra help might be the next step

By the end, you’ll feel more confident supporting big emotions, more connected to your child, and better equipped to build a calmer, warmer family life with fewer power struggles along the way.

You don’t need to get it right every time. You just need somewhere to start, and this is it.

“Why is bedtime such a battle?”

If the last hour of the day leaves you frazzled, you are not alone. Bedtime is one of the most common struggles parents bring to me, and it’s so understandable to feel worn out by it.

Here’s the thing, though. When a child resists sleep, it’s rarely about being difficult. More often than not, their tank is empty. The day’s big feelings, worries, and need for connection tend to surface right when we’re hoping they’ll wind down.

The good news is that small shifts make a real difference. A predictable rhythm, a gentler wind-down, and a few minutes of unhurried connection can make the nightly battle softer for everyone.

Swipe through for a few gentle ways to ease the bedtime struggle in your home. And remember, you don’t have to overhaul everything at once. One small change is plenty to start with.

Which part of bedtime feels trickiest in your house right now? Tell me below.

This is a safe space to be who you are 🌿

Every child who walks through the Thrive door is met exactly as they are. No version of themselves to perform, no parts to hide, no need to be anyone other than who they already are.

At Thrive, I believe young people grow best when they feel genuinely safe. Safe to feel big feelings. Safe to be quiet or loud, certain or unsure. Safe to express who they are, including how they understand their own gender and identity. Safe to be different, and to know that difference is something to be celebrated, not smoothed over.

Every child deserves to feel seen for exactly who they are, and to know that the person they are becoming is welcome here.

Whomever your child is, whatever they bring with them, there is a place for them here.

A safe space to be who you are. Always. 💛
