Do Olympians learn like the rest of us? Is Autism a supercharger for learning at the highest levels?
Episode 6 is out! Our guest, Olympian - Chris Morgan, represented Australia in three Olympics, and won two World Championships in rowing. He holds two university degrees. He was diagnosed with Autism as an adult. In something a bit different to our episodes on learning disorders, this is an episode on learning exceptionalism.

One of our favourite articles is called "What reading does for the mind". It highlights that if you read for just 5 mins reading per day, you will read about 300,000 words in a year. 15 mins per day is closer to 1.2 million words per year. Imagine how much better we would be at something if we did 1.2 million reps per year!? Get the snowball rolling ASAP to reap the benefits :)

Want to get better at reading but don't want to spend any money? Many of our families overlook the thing right in front of them! Of course, some students need support before they can even begin to read, and some will put up a fight because they 'hate it' (i.e. it's boring or hard). But for those who have enough decoding ability to get the wheels turning; home reading never goes astray!

Think of each 'reading minute' as a dollar in the bank, and you want your kid to save a million dollars. $5 a day isn't much at first, but years down the line you will have saved a lot! The sooner you start reading, the sooner you get the big rewards.

THE BENEFITS OF READING AT HOME🤓📖
Parents wonder just how important it is to get their kids to read at home (especially when it is usually a battle!). The short answer is that it is very important. Not surprisingly, if you read more, you get better at reading (think improvements in fluency and comprehension especially). But there are other benefits too. Some of the more interesting work I've seen is on how reading can build empathy. Having a narrator explain how someone else thinks allows you to see a whole other perspective and have it explained to you. Very helpful! So if you can, start some reading at home, even if just a few minutes a day, and build from there.

Dyslexia things I wish parents knew sooner...Part 2

Intensity is key! Of course, starting with an evidence-based program that actually follows 'the science of reading' principles is critical, but it's often not enough on its own. Students with learning disorders need LOTS of volume of practice in order to make progress. This means home-practice of your literacy work most nights/every night, and we often recommend about 20 minutes per night. Understandably, this is a big ask for families on top of everything else they have going on, and some simply can't do it that often. But we really emphasise the importance of homework to families because it is often what determines how fast you progress, or whether you progress at all.

When a child can’t get started on a task because they couldn’t read or understand the instructions — not because they didn’t know the content — that’s a literacy barrier, not a knowledge gap.
