Mick brings an incredible wealth of lived experience, artistry, and passion to our team. He isn't just a dedicated support worker; he is a powerhouse of creativity with a background that perfectly aligns with our mission to empower participants to achieve their recovery goals.
Here is a little bit about what makes Mick such a fantastic addition to our community:
A Lifelong Musician: Mick has been the frontman, manager, and songwriter for a successfully touring original country-rock band for over 20 years. With hundreds of original songs under his belt, he specialises in music support, songwriting, and live performance coaching.
A Master Storyteller: Beyond music, Mick is a highly experienced freelance journalist, editor, and the author of several novels. He holds a Master of Environmental Advocacy and a Bachelor of Media (Hons), bringing a deep love for storytelling and grassroots community connection.
Perfect for the Creativity Hub: Mick’s unique blend of artistic talent and mental health support makes him the perfect fit for our Creativity Hub in Tighes Hill. He is ready to help participants find their voice, whether that is through writing their first song, creative writing/self publishing, engaging in audio-visual projects, or simply building confidence through creative expression.
Local & Grounded: Based right here in the Hunter, Mick will be providing support across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the broader Hunter Valley. Oh, and he’s also a seasoned house painter—so he knows the value of hard, honest work!

We’re Hiring: Creative Writing Mentor / Support Worker! ✍️📚
At Rely-Ability, we’re dedicated to helping NDIS participants across Newcastle and the Hunter build independence, express themselves, and pursue their passions. We’re currently looking for a creative, encouraging, and patient Creative Writing Mentor to join our team!
In this role, you won't just be writing content—you’ll be working one-on-one with our participants to help them bring their own creative writing projects to life, from short stories and poetry to memoirs, novels and personal blogs.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Mentoring Participants: Guiding clients through the creative process, brainstorming ideas, and developing their writing skills.
Project Support: Helping participants structure, edit, and complete their personal writing goals (books, poetry, digital media, or personal journaling).
Building Confidence: Fostering a supportive, encouraging environment that empowers participants to share their unique voices.
Person-Centered Care: Providing engaging, tailored support inline with participants' NDIS goals.
What We’re Looking For:
A strong background or passion for creative writing, storytelling, or literature.
Previous experience in support work, mentoring, teaching, or allied health (or a strong desire to make a difference in the NDIS sector).
Exceptional communication, active listening, and empathy.
Valid NDIS Worker Screening Check, Driver's License, and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).
Based in the Newcastle / Hunter region.

As an experienced lead guitarist and singer who has toured internationally and performed with artists such as Jimmy Barnes and Marcia Hines, Dai brings exceptional skill, professionalism, and stage-level expertise to every session. He continues to perform regularly in local Newcastle venues as a soloist and as part of a trio, keeping his playing sharp and inspiring. Combined with his current role teaching music at TAFE, Dai delivers high-quality, personalised instruction and group activities that help participants build real technique, confidence, and enjoyment through music.
