Men's Health Month: Let's Talk About Something Many Men Avoid

Let's be honest. Talking about bowel habits isn't exactly a favorite topic of conversation.

But when it comes to your health, staying silent about changes in your body can sometimes mean missing important warning signs.

Bowel cancer is one of Australia's most common cancers, and while the risk increases with age, younger Australians are being diagnosed more frequently than many people realize.

Symptoms that shouldn't be ignored include:

• Blood in your stool
• A persistent change in bowel habits
• Ongoing diarrhea or constipation
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent fatigue
• Abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating

Having these symptoms doesn't automatically mean bowel cancer, but if they persist, it's important to have them assessed by your GP.

This Men's Health Month, let's challenge the idea that men should simply "push through" health concerns.

Looking after your health isn't a sign of weakness. It's one of the most important things you can do for yourself, your family, and the people who rely on you.

If you've noticed a change that doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Start the conversation.

Men's Health Month: Symptoms You Shouldn't Ignore

Last week, we discussed the difference between headaches and migraines. Today, we want to shine a spotlight on some symptoms that shouldn't be brushed aside or simply "pushed through", just because "YOU ARE A MAN."

While most headaches are not serious, certain symptoms may indicate that something more significant is happening and should be assessed by a GP.

Pay attention if you experience 🚨:

• Frequent or worsening headaches
• Changes in vision, including blurred vision or blind spots
• Dizziness or loss of balance
• Numbness or tingling in the face, arms, or legs
• Difficulty speaking or finding words
• Headaches that interfere with work, sleep, or daily activities

It's also worth keeping track of when symptoms occur, how long they last, and whether anything seems to trigger them.

The goal isn't to assume the worst. It's to recognize when your body may be asking for attention and to seek advice before a problem becomes more serious.

This Men's Health Month, don't ignore the warning signs. Looking after your health is one of the most important investments you can make in yourself and the people who rely on you.

Have you ever delayed getting a symptom checked because you thought it would go away on its own?

Men's Health Month: Is It Just a Headache... or Could It Be a Migraine?

Did you know that migraine is one of Australia's most common neurological conditions, affecting around 1.7 million Australians? Yet many people still dismiss migraine as "just a bad headache."

So what's the difference? How many times have you said, "It's just a headache," and carried on with your day?

A typical headache often feels like a dull ache or pressure around the head and may last a few hours 🧠

A migraine can cause intense throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, blurred vision, or visual disturbances known as an "Aura". Migraine attacks can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours ⚡

For some people, warning signs appear before the pain begins. These can include flashing lights, blind spots, tingling sensations, or difficulty concentrating.

If headaches are becoming frequent or affecting your daily life, don't ignore them. Having a conversation with your GP can help identify the cause and the right treatment options.

This Men's Health Month, make your health a priority. Your future self will thank you.

Looking after your health isn't a sign of weakness. It's one of the most important things you can do for yourself and the people who depend on you.

June is Men's Health Month 👨‍⚕️

Many men are great at looking after their families, workplaces, farms, businesses, and communities, but often put their own health last.

In regional communities like ours, it's common to push through discomfort, ignore symptoms, or delay routine check-ups because life gets busy. However, regular health checks can help detect issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions before they become serious.

This Men's Health Month, we encourage all men to take a moment to prioritize their well-being. Whether it's booking a routine check-up, discussing with your GP a health concern you've been putting off, or making small positive lifestyle changes, every step counts.

Your health isn't just important to you, it's important to the people who care about you.

We'll be sharing insights to help men better understand their health systems, and how to take precautionary measures before health issues become serious.

DID YOU KNOW? 💡

A stroke can affect the brain within minutes.

When blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or reduced, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, causing damage that can happen very quickly.

Depending on the area of the brain affected, a stroke may impact:
• Speech and communication
• Movement and coordination
• Memory and thinking
• Vision
• Balance and mobility

The faster medical treatment is received, the better the chances of reducing long-term brain damage and improving recovery outcomes.

The good news is that many strokes can be prevented or their risks reduced through healthy lifestyle choices and regular health checks.

Simple steps such as managing blood pressure, staying physically active, avoiding smoking, eating a balanced diet, and attending regular check-ups can make a significant difference.

Remember to THINK FAST 🚨:
F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call emergency services

Knowing the signs and acting quickly could help save a life.
