We are pleased to share the launch of the 24/7 Cancer Care Support Line, a new service for patients receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital.

Dr Joel Collins from Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology Clinic (THOC) has worked closely with St Andrew’s Hospital to help establish this important service for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

This free, 24/7 support line is available to patients receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy at St Andrew’s Hospital, providing access to the SATH oncology nursing team at any time of the day or night.

For patients and their families, knowing that one of the oncology nurses from their SATH care team is available to provide support outside of regular hospital hours can offer an added sense of reassurance throughout the treatment journey.

Cancer treatment can be a challenging and uncertain time, and having access to the right support when questions or concerns arise can make an important difference.

The nursing team can provide guidance around symptoms, treatment side effects and concerns relating to your chemotherapy or immunotherapy and help patients understand what they should do next.

Supporting our patients throughout their cancer treatment journey is at the heart of this service, and we are proud to have worked alongside SATH to bring this important service to our region - providing access to experienced oncology nursing support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This weekend, our Medical Oncologist Dr Tasafin Hossain (Dr Tas) is heading west to Goondiwindi for the Gundy Medical Muster - an event held every two years that brings together healthcare professionals from across rural and regional Queensland.

At Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology Clinic, we believe that where you live shouldn’t determine the quality or timeliness of the care you receive.

That’s why we’re committed to working closely with our rural and regional colleagues - building strong clinical relationships, sharing knowledge and supporting local healthcare teams so their patients can access specialist cancer care as close to home as possible.

While she’s at the Muster, Dr Tas will be connecting with colleagues and sharing information about our Rapid Access Cancer Assessment Pathway (RACAP) - a pathway designed to help GPs and other healthcare professionals fast-track specialist assessment for patients presenting with concerns that may indicate cancer, helping reduce delays in reaching a diagnosis and getting the right care underway.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month - an opportunity to recognise the thousands of Australians living with blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and the families who support them.

At Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology Clinic, we’re proud to provide specialist haematology care right here in the Darling Downs.

Our team of Consultant Haematologists provides diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care for patients with blood cancers, wherever possible allowing them to receive their care close to home, close to their families and their support networks.

We are excited to announce that Dr Melanie Jackson, Consultant Paediatric Haematologist, has joined our specialist team and is now available for telehealth consultations, providing greater access to expert paediatric haematology care for children and adolescents across Toowoomba, the Darling Downs and surrounding regional communities.

Dr Jackson is passionate about the diagnosis and management of benign blood disorders in children and adolescents. She completed her specialist training in Queensland before undertaking a prestigious two-year fellowship at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Canada, where she continued practising for several years. Following two years working in Sydney, she returned home in 2025.

Her clinical interests include immune haematological conditions, the medical management of vascular anomalies and myeloproliferative disorders. She is committed to partnering with families, embracing shared decision-making and working collaboratively with referring doctors and healthcare teams to provide the highest standard of care.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr Jackson to our growing team and look forward to supporting more families with timely access to specialist paediatric haematology care.

At St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital, every newly diagnosed breast cancer is discussed at a dedicated Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, chaired by Dr Peter O'Donohue.

The MDT brings together specialists from surgery, radiology, pathology, medical oncology and radiation oncology, with representatives from Queensland X-Ray, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology, Icon Cancer Centre, breast care nursing and other treating clinicians reviewing each patient's diagnosis and treatment options together.

By bringing multiple specialists together to review your imaging, pathology and clinical information, treatment recommendations are based on the complete clinical picture, not a single opinion.

This is more than a reception role. Working closely with our Practice Manager and General Manager, you'll play an integral role in the day-to-day operations of our clinic. At Toowoomba Haematology & Oncology Clinic, we're proud to have a team of three Consultant Haematologists - Dr Joel Collins, Dr Marcus Dickey and Dr Stephanie Wallwork - all providing expert care to patients across the Darling Downs and surrounding regions.

Collectively, our haematologists have supported our community for many years, caring for thousands of patients and building a well-established specialist service close to home.

But what exactly does a haematologist treat?

Haematologists are specialist physicians who diagnose and manage conditions affecting the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. After completing medical school and physician training, they undertake several additional years of advanced specialist training in haematology to care for patients with both benign blood disorders and blood cancers.

Our team cares for patients with a wide range of conditions, including:
