🔸EXERCISE OF THE WEEK 🔸

This week’s exercise is by our Exercise Physiologist, Cybele. Her exercise is an Isometric Hip Extension.

▪️Article of the Week ▪️

This weeks article is by our Exercise Physiologist Matt. His Article is about Patients perspectives on their anterior cruciate ligament injury and its care- a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis.

This systematic review of 56 studies and 800+ patients found that ACL rehab often involves:
• fear of reinjury
• loss of athletic identity
• anxiety and frustration
• social isolation
• major impacts on confidence and mental health

The review also highlighted how clinician language and external messaging can shape recovery beliefs — meaning the way we talk to patients matters. ACL rehab needs to move beyond just strength, ROM and return-to-sport testing. A truly effective rehab approach should also address psychological readiness, confidence, fear, support systems, identity and mental wellbeing.

High-Intensity Strength Training in Nonagenarians

Muscle matters at every age.
This study looked at frail adults in their 90s and found that just 8 weeks of high-intensity strength training led to improvements in muscle size, muscle strength, and walking ability.

The big takeaway? Muscle loss isn’t always permanent. Even very old adults were able to rebuild strength and function with the right training stimulus.

This is a powerful reminder that resistance training isn’t just about fitness. It’s about maintaining independence, mobility, and quality of life as we age.
