Children don’t learn to calm themselves by being left alone with big feelings.

Self-regulation doesn’t appear overnight, and it isn’t something children simply choose to do.

It develops through thousands of moments where a calm, emotionally available adult helps a child feel safe enough for their nervous system to settle.

This is called co-regulation.

Over time, children begin to internalise those experiences. The calm voice becomes their inner voice. The reassurance becomes their confidence. The strategies become their own.

Understanding this changes the question from ā€œWhy can’t they regulate themselves?ā€ to ā€œHow can I help them get there?ā€

Because connection doesn’t stop children becoming independent—it is how independence begins.

If this helped you understand emotional regulation in a new way, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

At Liza’s Place on Herries Street, we offer trauma‑informed, neuroaffirming therapy tailored for children and families across Toowoomba, Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley. Our approach focuses on safety, relationship-building, sensory needs and developmentally‑appropriate strategies rather than only talk therapy.
