Supporting mental wellbeing, personal growth & a healthier mind 🧠✨

Hi, I’m Clarissa Perry, a Registered Psychologist with a Master of Professional Psychology. I am passionate about supporting individuals and families to navigate challenges and strengthen their relationships.

Clarissa has experience working across a range of settings, including forensic environments and specialised mental health services. She has a particular interest in supporting children and adults with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities, with a focus on understanding their individual strengths, needs, and experiences.

When I’m not in the clinic, I’m usually soaking up the sunshine outdoors, catching up with friends and family, or making the most of time spent with the people I love.

No two days in the clinic are ever the same!

One session might involve sitting down with an athlete discussing their mindset before a big game, another may be going out with a child to play tennis and talk about why they feel they can't attend school.

Behind the scenes, there’s planning, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to helping people feel supported.

What stays consistent is the goal: creating a space where people feel heard, understood, and empowered to move toward their goals.

Many athletes believe confidence comes before success.

In reality, confidence is built through consistent action, not by waiting until you feel ready.

Every training session completed.
Every challenge faced.
Every mistake learned from.

These experiences create evidence that you can perform under pressure.

Instead of asking:
"What if I fail?"

Try asking:
"What have I done to prepare for this moment?"

The strongest athletes don't wait to feel confident before taking action. They build confidence by continuing to show up.

When a child refuses to go to school, it's easy to focus on the behaviour. But often, school refusal is a sign that something deeper is going on.

For some children, school can feel overwhelming due to:
🏫 Anxiety about being away from home
👫 Friendship difficulties
📚 Academic pressure
😟 Fear of making mistakes
🌱 Changes in routine or life circumstances
📢 Sensory Concerns

Instead of asking, "How do I make them go?", it can help to ask, "What is my child trying to communicate?"

Listening with curiosity, validating their feelings, and working together to understand the underlying cause can make a meaningful difference.

If school refusal continues or becomes increasingly distressing, seeking support early can help children regain confidence and develop the skills they need to return to school successfully.

Every child deserves to feel safe, supported and capable of learning.

Has your child ever found school particularly challenging? You're not alone. If you're concerned about ongoing school refusal, our team is here to help.

Mistakes are part of life and sport, at every level.

The challenge isn’t avoiding mistakes altogether, but learning how to respond when they happen.

Athletes who recover well often focus on resetting quickly, staying present, and avoiding getting stuck replaying what went wrong.

A mistake doesn’t define performance, but how you respond afterwards can shape what happens next.

We love supporting all people to implement strategies and frameworks for overcoming mistakes and getting back in the game! 💪🧠

Few things are harder to hear than your kid saying, "I'm not good enough."

Our first instinct is often to reply with, "Of course you are!" While reassuring, children sometimes need more than encouragement—they need to feel heard.

Instead, try:
💙 "That sounds like a really hard feeling."
💙 "Can you tell me what made you think that?"
💙 "Everyone has moments when they doubt themselves."
💙 "Let's work through this together."

Helping children talk about self-doubt teaches them that difficult thoughts don't have to define who they are.

Confidence isn't built by never feeling uncertain—it's built by learning that those thoughts don't have the final say.

Every supportive conversation helps strengthen your child's resilience and self-belief.

Have you ever been surprised by something your child has said about themselves? You're not alone—share your experiences below.

The Active Health Psychology team proudly took on the Running Festival! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

From the first kilometre to the finish line, it was an incredible day of pushing our limits, supporting one another, and putting both our physical and mental resilience to the test.

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers and organisers who made the event possible. Your hard work and enthusiasm created such a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

We're already looking forward to doing it all again next year! 💙

Positive Discipline vs Punishment.

Discipline isn't about punishment—it's about teaching.

When children make mistakes, they're often still learning skills like emotional regulation, impulse control and problem-solving. While punishment may stop a behaviour in the moment, it doesn't always teach children what to do instead.

Positive discipline focuses on helping children learn while maintaining a strong parent-child relationship.

Try these approaches:
💙 Stay calm before responding.
💙 Set clear and consistent boundaries.
💙 Explain why a behaviour isn't okay.
💙 Teach and practise the behaviour you'd like to see next time.
💙 Praise positive choices whenever you notice them.
💙 Tell them what actions they should be doing in this scenario, it's easier for them to correct the behaviour.

Children learn best when they feel safe, understood and supported.

The goal isn't to raise children who fear making mistakes—it's to raise children who learn from them.

What's one positive discipline strategy that's worked well in your family? Share it in the comments.

Gentle Reminders for Hard Days

❤️ You do not have to have everything figured out today.
❤️ Rest is productive too.
❤️ Your feelings are valid, even if they don’t make sense right now.
❤️ Small steps still count as progress.
❤️ You are allowed to ask for support.
❤️ Difficult moments do not last forever.
❤️ Breathe slowly — your nervous system may just need safety, not pressure.
❤️ Speak to yourself the way you would speak to someone you love.
❤️ Getting through the day is enough sometimes.
❤️ You are doing better than you think.

Save this for the days that feel heavy.
