World Glaucoma Week

This week is World Glaucoma Week with the theme encouraging Australians to “Treat Your Eyes.”

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and affects around 300,000 Australians, yet 50% don’t know they have it because they haven’t had a comprehensive eye examination.

Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma develops slowly and can cause peripheral vision loss before symptoms are noticed.

Unfortunately there is no cure for glaucoma and vision loss is irreversible. Early detection is essential, with treatment it may delay or halt the progression.
