A lot of people are waiting. ⏳

Waiting for the pain to settle. Waiting for the “all clear.” Waiting until they feel ready before they get back to the things they actually want to do.

I understand why. When your back has been sore for months, it feels sensible to wait until it calms down before you start living again.

But the waiting doesn’t end. The pain doesn’t fully settle on its own, life stays on hold, and the longer it goes the harder it feels to start.

Pain is real, but it’s not always a reliable measure of damage. You do not need to wait until pain is gone before you start rebuilding.
Often it’s the rebuilding itself, done in a way that fits you, that helps the pain settle. Not the other way around.

You don’t claim your life back by waiting. You claim it back by starting, gradually, with a plan that makes sense for where you’re at right now.

If you’ve been stuck in the waiting, it might be worth a conversation about what starting could actually look like for you.

Pain education isn’t fluff. A 2019 meta-analysis said so, not just me.

Understanding pain doesn’t automatically mean your pain will vanish. But it gives you a launchpad to start claiming back your life.

Pain is real, but it doesn’t always mean ongoing damage, especially when it’s stuck around for months or years. Knowing the difference isn’t about dismissing your pain. It’s about giving you more options to move forward.

Pain is your body's alarm system: Useful, but not always accurate.

Sometimes the alarm gets louder even when there's no new damage. Like a smoke alarm that goes off every time you burn toast. Real signal. Not a fire.

This doesn't mean your pain isn't real. It absolutely is. It just means there's often more we can do than "wait for healing."

Understanding pain better is one of the first steps forward.

Most ‘abnormal’ back scan findings are actually normal

Series launch: Reading notes from the research, fortnightly.

First up: a 2015 systematic review that looked at MRI scans of more than 3,000 adults with no back pain at all. What they found changes how scans should be interpreted.

Around 30% of pain-free 20-year-olds had disc bulges. By age 80, almost everyone had “wear and tear” - without any pain.

These changes are like grey hair. Common with age. Not always a sign of damage.

If you've been waiting to feel "ready" before getting back to the things you used to do, this one's for you.

For persistent pain, waiting often makes things worse. The body deconditions, fear grows, and the world gets smaller.

You don't need zero pain to start. You need clarity about what's safe, a plan that fits your life, and someone in your corner.

Save this for the next time pain tells you to stop.

Restarting exercise after months or years off?

The most common mistake isn’t doing too little. It’s starting too hard, expecting to pick up where you left off, and quitting when the soreness or pain shows up on day three.

Here’s what actually works:

• Start smaller than feels worthwhile
• Anchor it to something you already do
• Frequency over intensity for the first month
• Have a “bad day” plan ready
• Connect it to something that matters

If you’re restarting with persistent pain or an old injury, individualised guidance can help you get the dose right.

Save this one for when you’re ready.

On Anzac Day, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice and service of those who have served, those who continue to serve, and those who never made it home.

I’ve had the privilege of working with veterans and serving members of the Australian Defence Force for the past 13 years, and I’m continually reminded of the resilience, humility and strength carried by this community.

To all veterans, current serving members, and their families — thank you.

Your service and sacrifice are deeply respected.

Lest we forget.
