Geoff Nyssen - Empowerment, Wellness and Living Deliberately

Geoff Nyssen - Empowerment, Wellness and Living Deliberately As a cancer fighter, I want to demonstrate that you can become empowered, embrace change and live deliberately when times are difficult.

Public speaker, writer, consultant and ordinary family guy! In all contexts, I consider myself to be a normal forty something guy, living a pretty normal life. I am married and have two beautiful children. I have also devoted much time to my career as an environmental consultant. In February 2014, my normal life as I knew it was rocked when I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of terminal

blood cancer. At first I was thoroughly disempowered by my diagnosis. However, with much will, determination and support I found a way to empower myself from this position of adversity. Now I live in my 'new normal'. In this space, I feel inspired to share what I have learnt relating to Wellness, Empowerment and Deliberate Living. I use my story to inspire those around me to be the best they can be. I connect with people through my writing, public presentations and leading by example being active in my community. I share stories about my cancer journey, both the challenges and the triumphs, and relate these to how I have used nutrition, exercise, meditation, gratitude and goal setting to derive a purposeful life for myself. It is my intention that these stories inspire others to consider the precious value of their own life, and follow my steps towards living deliberately. I really don't know how long I am going to be present on this world. However, I do know that I am going to fight hard to stay here, I am going to do meaningful things that inspire myself and others to be their best, and I am going to have a great time doing it!!

On Friday night the Snowdome Foundation and Snowdome volunteer, Geoff Nyssen were honoured at the Third Sector Awards winning the Small Charity of the Year and Volunteer of the Year Awards.

It was serendipitous that this acknowledgment, from the not-for-profit sector, came on the first day of Blood Cancer Awareness Month, recognising the passion that Geoff and the Snowdome community have for accelerating next-generation treatments for Australians affected by blood cancer.

As a Snowdome family we feel a deep sense of gratitude to all who made this possible. To our founders, past and current board and executive members, researchers and their teams, donors and fundraisers, volunteers, partner organisations and patients who have participated in clinical trials, we celebrate this incredible recognition with you.

We also warmly acknowledge the other blood cancer organisations to which Geoff so selflessly gives of himself - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, WEHI - The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Myeloma Australia. We are incredibly proud to be part of this passionate community working tirelessly to improve outcomes for those affected by blood cancer.

Thank you Third Sector News for this greatly appreciated recognition.

Behind every good Stem Cell Transplant sits the Transplant Preparation. For me this has been a little hot and cold. You have to read on to see what I am talking about!!

Take care.

Hello my healing team, I hope this update finds you well.

As I sit in the Alfred undergoing pre stem cell transplant testing, I contemplate all the amazing things that I am grateful for in my life.

As I write this, I sit at the Alfred Hospital doing all of the protesting before I can undergo a Stem Cell Transplant (SCT) which is booked in for mid April.  Today, I have had a full skeletal survey, a chest X-ray, a cardiac test, an ECG and a detailed blood exam, all completed to ensure that my bo...

Today, my family and I head to Townsville for a busy few days. Tomorrow and Friday, I present to the local GHD teams in Townsville and Cairns around Empowerment in Adversity, then on Saturday I join my sister Amber Thomas on Magnetic Island at her Cabaret Night fundraiser, raising $$ and awareness of Multiple Myeloma!! Another presentation!! Again, will work to inspire those present to be the best they can be and to give. It all feels super worthwhile and I can do it with my family!!

It's still a pretty good gig!! Winning!!
