One of the great things about being this type of neurospicy..... Is the array of fun ideas I constantly come up with....

The down side is the challenges with actually finishing said passion projects!

So today I want to celebrate a (mostly) finished project! I say mostly because..... a farm themed Old MacDonald Had a Farm yoga book is now available to buy, read and play with! But of course, I can't help but fiddle with little details for future copies.

Coming to physio to do exercises and move is great.... But being able to practice at home, or get more movement into everyday activities for ALL kids is even better!

If you want to check out some farm yoga and games have a look at our book next time you are in, or get in touch if you would like to purchase a copy to be sent to you

When a little one is a bit nervous about the walking frame..... And you need to make it funny again.

😁 Therapy dogs to the rescue!

I haven't actually done walking pushing something with Toro before, so this was a trial and error type situation. But he did amazing and we successfully got a few laps with a little human in the frame as well!

Sometimes I come with activities for kids.....
And then try myself and discover just how hard they are!!

To be fair.... I am generally giving the kiddos more help with it than I received in any of these videos!

We do our best to make appointments as fun as possible for kids, hiding exercises in games or favourite topics.
For some kids though they either have goals that really need much more specific and controlled exercise, or they are not able to be tricked into doing activities my way instead of their own.

For some older kiddos I have started working on a combination of Sideshow Alley type games, and specific exercises to earn tokens that can be redeemed at the end of term for prizes.

Being a paediatric physio means a lot of finding new ways to present games or help build motivation.

Lately we've had an uptick in kids who are toe walking coming to us after a long history of toe walking.
In some cases it hasn't been considered an issue or priority until recently and in others it's been "treated" with rigid shoes preventing the toe walking, but is persisting. These shoes may also be causing pain, frustration and are only a solution while you are wearing the shoes (and in one case, the young man opted to throw said shoes onto the roof of the school to avoid them!).

Long term - once calves start to get tight, relaxing down gets harder and kids are likely to just keep getting stronger, tighter and higher to avoid triggering that painful stretch. We really want to avoid this by intervening as early as possible!

If you have concerns about toe walking please get in touch. We are able to provide assessment, activities and support tailored to the level of toe walking and stiffness or pain each child is experiencing. The sooner we can intervene, the less secondary issues like tightness or habit we also have to work through or we can prevent occurring in situations where the toe walkingohht be more driven by emotions such as anxiety.

Some of the non-billable things that fill my day....

Working with kids and people with disabilities isn't the same as most physiotherapy work.

We need to work out what's going on in the body, muscles, sensory or nervous system that is making completing the goal challenging....

Come up with the right exercises to target that.... But we often can't just explain why the exercises will work and prescribe them. Or supervise practice while typing up our notes....

We need to work out how to explain, practice and monitor outcomes when working with someone who may not be able to communicate any questions, discomfort or issues easily. Or who may not be able to understand, or gets overwhelmed by the instructions.

We need to motivate and engage kids and so make it lay based, distract from the challenge or discomfort and maintain control of the game to actually get the exercise done.

We need to come up with a reason to do squats, or sit up straight or crawl that overcomes that difficulty.

We need to keep it varied and unique and fun.

I spend a lot of time in trial and error to work out a new way to activate muscles or encourage control of movement.

This is research and development in action. Treatment complexity reduces our time (and brain space) to fill our whole days with back to back appointments.
This is not time I can bill to NDIS, or a family, but taking this time allows us to improve quality of life and enjoyment for the young people we see who sometimes miss out on so much of the fun of life.
