Say It Your Way provides Speech Pathology services and communication aids to individuals with disabilities. We are passionate about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and have a particular focus on intervention for children with complex communication needs (little or no speech). We are a mobile service that provides support to families in the Townsville area. We travel to your home s

o that we can support the development of speech, language and communication for real reasons, in real environments. Say it Your way is a family-centered practice. We encourage families to participate and collaborate with the Speech Pathologist during all stages of service provision.

What does aided language modelling (or aided language input) look like for an early communicator?

⭐️ Follow their lead
⭐️ Talk about things that they are interested in
⭐️ Narrate what you see
⭐️ No expectations that they will respond or also point to a symbol (if they do, that's great. Respond to any forms of communication. If they don't, that's also fine)
⭐️ Not quizzing or testing knowledge
⭐️ Modelling language for a range of different reasons - not just requesting and choice making.

Not captured: the 57 other times we sung this same song 😂 luckily repetition is also a great strategy.

Communicating when out and about can be a daunting step for AAC users and their families/ communication partners.

So proud of Miss A (and her amazing mum) for building more and more confidence to share stories everywhere they go. In this video, she was sharing that they needed to go to the shops to get a birthday present for dad! We hope dad has a great birthday! 🥳

Modelling language using Proloquo2go 💬 for an AAC user who is focusing on expanding vocabulary and extending phrase length.

Things to note:
⭐️ I'm not telling the AAC user that they have to say the message.
⭐️ I'm modelling language that matches what he is doing and interested in. Communication in context, for real reasons.
⭐️ I'm not telling him that he has to look or watch every thing in doing. I know he is paying attention even when it looks like he isn't.
⭐️ Statements instead of questions - "I want four wheels" instead of "how many wheels do you want?"

This may look random... but there are a lot of great things happening here.

In my previous session, this young man did the same thing - lined both of our iPads up and was saying words on both iPads. He repeated a few words and I realised that he was showing me that one iPad had some different words. We worked out that this was because one app had been updated but the other hadn't. He knew that they were usually exactly the same. He was directing my attention to this and asking for help.

This video was taken during our next session. We had updated both iPads and he was going through to check the words were now the same. He is also doing a lot of exploring vocab and is showing great operational skills - he knows how to find the words he is looking for.

This isn't random. It isn't meaningless. It's a part of how he learns, processes and expands his language skills and how he can use AAC to express what he wants to say.
