Onwards and upwards! After sad goodbyes at Hyde Park, Dr Aubrey, her anaesthetic colleague Dr Vartis and their theatre team last week supported the first caesarean birth at Mater Pimlico in more than 20 years! Congratulations and thanks to our lovely patient, who was so tolerant as the team managed all the challenges a new environment can bring.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in maternity care at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville — now officially located at our Pimlico campus.

This is a special milestone for our team and the families we support. After months of planning, preparation, and thoughtful design, we’re proud to open the doors to our new maternity home.

What this means for you:
Our new location has been purposefully created to offer a calm, comfortable and family‑centred birthing experience. From refreshed, welcoming spaces to modern facilities, every detail has been designed with mothers, babies and families in mind.

If you have questions about your upcoming birth, your appointments, or how the move relates to your care, your obstetrician or midwife is the best person to guide you.

From Dr Sally: While the opening of the new maternity ward brings much to be excited about, it’s also the end of an era for Mater Hyde Park. With the change comes the end of my operating lists in our little satellite hospital. After spending more than 10 hours a week together for more than seven years, the operating team at Hyde Park have been a constant in my life, helping me transition into a surgeon in my own right and offering care and support to me throughout. Some of the most important key members of our team aren’t coming with us to Pimlico, and I want to acknowledge all that they’ve done for me through the years. My patients have been amazingly well cared for by the teams in day surgery and recovery, my own theatre nurses, anaesthetic teams, stores staff, CSSD and orderlies. I want to particularly acknowledge Joan and Nicole for their unwavering support of me through the years, and Ange as the ‘new boss’ over the last year or so too. You are all amazing and I thank you all so much.

We want to share the lovely news that Ramandeep, our medical student whom many of you will have met in recent weeks, her husband Amardeep and son Roohaan all became Australian citizens today! We were so happy to celebrate this lovely family on the day they became Aussies. Congratulations to you all!

🤩 1 week to go — week 39 🤩

👶 Your baby is now about the size of a wallaby joey, typically weighing 3.3–3.5+ kg and measuring 50–52 cm. They’ve developed a strong grasp, their reflexes are now beautifully coordinated, and their lungs continue to mature in preparation for breathing independently. Their brain has tripled in weight during the third trimester — these final days support incredible growth and readiness for birth.

🏥 Our update: In just one week, we’ll be opening the doors to our new maternity home at Pimlico. We can’t wait to welcome you into this thoughtfully designed space — created with comfort, privacy, and family‑centred care at its heart.
