Megan Spindler-Smith, Acting CEO of People with Disability Australia, Sophie Cusworth, Chief Executive of Women with Disabilities Australia, and Dr Martin Laverty, Chief Executive of Aruma, addressed the National Press Club on Monday, speaking about the proposed reforms to the NDIS.

Megan Spindler-Smith highlighted – as The Australia Institute often does – that budgets are about choices. These NDIS reforms are a choice, not an inevitability.

She said the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 “makes people with disability pay the price for a choice the Government did not have to make”.

I believe I’m Allyship!

Saturday 8 August is International Allyship Day. For reconciliation work in NSW, allyship means non-Indigenous people walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, not out in front of them.

Here's what that looks like on an ordinary day:

🔹 Learning whose Country you live and work on, and the history of that place
🔹 Listening first, and staying in the room when the conversation gets uncomfortable
🔹 Following Aboriginal leadership rather than trying to replace it
🔹 Backing Aboriginal-led organisations with your time, your money and your voice
🔹 Speaking up when racism happens, especially when no Aboriginal person is in the room

None of it is dramatic. All of it adds up.

Allyship is measured in years, not in one day on the calendar.
