Daisy the Dalmatian is back in the clinic!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whilst Lisa (Clinical Psychologist) returned to the clinic from her maternity leave many months ago, her therapy dog Daisy has only recently joined back in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Daisy has recently been lucky to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and company during some outdoor therapy with child clients in the green space adjacent to our clinic.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Outdoor sessions with Daisy are organised in line with therapeutic goals, such as increasing participation in sessions, recognising emotions and communication in ourselves and others, and practicing mindfulness of our environment for improved emotion regulation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On other occasions Daisy will sit happily on her mat for an in-clinic session, providing great company and a calming presence. Even after over a year away from the clinic she still remembers exactly what to do!

All jobs have their unique challenges, but let’s put medicine in the spotlight for today.
👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏼‍⚕️🧑🏽‍⚕️

At some stage, doctors you rely on have all experienced
the long hours, intensive training, the on-call with sleepless nights, the need to turn up at work the next day notwithstanding, taking home worries about patients, unsocial hours, compassion fatigue, burnout, fear of making mistakes, the increasing fear of litigation, the anxiety of board investigations, the difficulty in maintaining connections outside of work, poorly supported training rotations, the increasing violence against health care workers, and workplace bullying within a hierarchical training structure paired with punishing conditions. The accumulation of many of these moments is what puts our doctors at disproportionately high risk of poor mental health and su***de.

Operational targets in medical settings are often also set top-down by individuals that rarely set foot in the clinical domain, resulting in a mismatch between the clinical work demanded of them throughout their day to meet patient needs, and expectations from above.

The resilience myth in medicine - “When I was battling the demons of severe depression and suicidal ideation, the word ‘resilience’ was mentioned … well, more stated at me. You’re just not resilient enough … if only you were stronger … you’re just not able to cope … you know not everyone is cut out to be a doctor … have you considered another career? … you are too sensitive, too self-reflective, that’s your problem. I was a 20-year plus veteran in the profession however.” - Dr Geoff Toogood, Consultant Cardiologist and Founder of . Medicine takes a bright group of people who are caring, self-reflective and sensitive – is this not what one requires in a doctor? – and places them in a hostile and increasingly unforgiving environment. The result is an increase in mental health issues.

🧦CRAZY SOCKS FOR DOCS DAY - THIS FRIDAY!🧦

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Start picking out your craziest socks, and extra points if you mismatch them from two different pairs.

We’re taking part to acknowledge all of our fellow healthcare professionals, especially our referring GPs, paediatricians, and psychiatrists, who we know take great care in the health (including mental health) of others.

We all rely on doctors in our times of need, and their knowledge, skills, and manner save lives regularly. But doctors are human beings before they’re doctors, so let’s spend a day reflecting on the impact of their work on their own mental health. We’ll be posting more in the coming days, but for now just get your crazy socks ready.

A bit more about Crazy Socks for Docs ⬇️

🧦 Crazy Socks for Docs is an annual event which highlights mental health challenges experienced by doctors (+ other healthcare workers) and strives to make it okay to talk about them.

🧦 The aim is to continue to raise awareness about mental health in healthcare workers, but also to focus on removing the stigma associated with it.

🧦 The Crazysocks4docs Trust Foundation was established to fulfil Dr Geoff Toogood’s vision of breaking down the stigma around mental health issues in doctors and health professionals. He wants to reduce doctors’ su***de around the world, in response to the long-standing challenges faced by doctors, and the disproportionately high su***de rates in the medical profession.

🧦 Geoff is the founder of the Crazysocks4docs movement. He is a consultant cardiologist in Melbourne, Victoria. He has lived experience of both depression and anxiety. He faced stigma and discrimination at many levels and was determined that once recovered he would create an awareness movement to break down the stigma faced by health professionals.
