Check out this video demonstrating the assessment and treatment of BPPV.
The first movement-the Dix-Hallpike test-is used to identify which side is causing the vertigo and help confirm a diagnosis of BPPV. This position is typically held for around 30 seconds while we monitor for symptoms and look for nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), which can provide important diagnostic information.
Once we know the affected side, we move straight into the Epley manoeuvre. Similar to the assessment, each position is held for approximately 30 seconds before progressing to the next. The Epley uses a series of specific head and body positions to guide the inner ear crystals back into place, helping reduce or resolve symptoms of dizziness.
Assessment → diagnosis → treatment, often all in the same session.
If your dizziness is triggered by rolling in bed, looking up, or bending over, it may be worth getting checked.

Ever rolled over in bed and felt the room spin? 👀💫

One common cause of vertigo is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo).

BPPV happens when tiny crystals in the inner ear become displaced and move into the wrong canal. This can confuse your balance system and trigger sudden dizziness or spinning sensations with head movements.

Common triggers include:
• Rolling in bed
• Looking up
• Bending over
• Quick head turns

The good news is a special manoeuvre in Physiotherapy can help move these crystals back to the right canal. Stay tuned next week when we show you how this manouvre is performed!

To finish off our TMJ series, here's a simple stretch you can do at your desk at work (or at any other time during your day!).
This is great for people who hold tension through the jaw, clench during the day, or feel stiff/tight around the jaw muscles after long periods at a computer.
Open your mouth as wide as you feel comfortable, enough to feel a stretch
Start to increase the time you're holding for as tolerated.

Don't forget, if you're experiencing any jaw pain, clicking, grinding or discomfort, book in and see us for an assessment! All our Physio's are trained in the basics of TMJ assessment and management but our Physio Tim has done more extensive training to treat and manage the jaw!

Continuing on with our TMJ theme, Check out this video of what’s called Rocabado exercises 👇
6 exercises, performed 6 times a day, for 6 reps each. These are commonly prescribed for people experiencing TMJ pain, jaw clicking, clenching, headaches, or neck tension. They may not be the only exercises we prescribe to you but they can often be included with many issues.

The aim is to improve jaw control, resting position, posture, breathing patterns, and the connection between the jaw and neck to help reduce irritation and improve overall movement quality.

So you've got jaw pain, and want to know what to expect for your first Physiotherapy appointment-this post is for you!

In a physio assessment, we’re looking at many factors:
• How your jaw moves (opening, closing, side-to-side)
• Whether there’s clicking, locking, or pain
• Muscle tension in the jaw, face, and neck
• Your neck mobility and posture
• Habits like clenching, grinding, or chewing patterns

Why does this matter?
Because jaw pain is often influenced by more than just the joint itself.

Depending on what’s driving your symptoms, treatment might include:
• Hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension
• Exercises to improve jaw control and movement
• Neck treatment (because it’s often involved)
• Dry needling (if indicated) around the jaw muscles, neck and shoulders
• Education around load (e.g. chewing, talking, gym habits)
• Strategies to reduce clenching or grinding

Why does my jaw hurt? 🤔

Jaw pain is often linked to your Tempero-Mandibular Joint (jaw joint).

It can show up as:
• Clicking or popping
• Pain with chewing or yawning
• Headaches or earaches
• Stiffness or locking

Common causes 👇
• Clenching or grinding
• Muscle tension-from your jaw or neck
• Poor posture
• Overuse (gum, hard foods)
• Joint irritation or injury at the jaw joint itself

Good news: you don’t have to live with it.
Physio can help reduce pain, improve movement, and manage flare-ups.

If it’s not settling, get it checked early ✔️

Going through peri, meno or postmenopause and not sure what you should be doing?
🏋️‍♀️ Strength training is the number one non negotiable during this phase of life.
Why: estrogen drops → muscle mass, bone density, and tendon health all decline.
Aim for 2–3 sessions/week, 3x10-12 of each, focusing on:
Squats / sit-to-stands
Deadlifts or hip hinges
Step-ups or lunges
Push-ups or chest press
Rows
These are just some of the examples of exercises great for menopause.
Stay tuned as a new group exercise class is coming to the clinic that focuses on this population!
