💉 Important Vaccine Update for Adults 65+
As we get older, our immune system becomes less effective at fighting some infections. Staying up to date with vaccination is an important way to reduce the risk of serious illness and hospitalisation.

There have been some important updates to Australian vaccination recommendations for older adults:

🫁 PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE – now recommended from age 65
The Australian Immunisation Handbook now recommends one dose of the newer 21-valent pneumococcal vaccine (Capvaxive®) for all adults aged 65 years and over. This is an important change—the routine recommended age was previously 70 years. (Immunisation Handbook)

🔥 SHINGLES VACCINE – from age 65
Shingrix® is recommended and free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) from age 65. It is given as 2 doses, usually 2–6 months apart, and provides protection against shingles and its painful complication, post-herpetic neuralgia. (Immunisation Handbook)

🫁 RSV VACCINE
RSV can cause significant chest infections and hospitalisation in older adults. Current Australian recommendations include:
• 75 years and over: one dose is recommended
• 60 years and over with medical conditions that increase the risk of severe RSV: one dose is recommended
• 60–74 years without additional risk factors: vaccination can still be considered. (Immunisation Handbook)

🌿 Keeping Well as Winter Turns to Spring 🌸
As we say goodbye to winter and welcome the warmer days of spring, it’s a great time to check in on your health and get ready for the season ahead.
At Family Doctors @ Tuggerah, we encourage you and your family to:
💉 Stay up to date with vaccinations – including influenza, COVID-19 and other vaccines recommended for your age and health conditions.
🤧 Prepare for spring allergies – hay fever and asthma can flare as pollen levels rise. Make sure your medications and asthma action plan are up to date.
❤️ Catch up on preventive health checks – blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes screening, cervical screening, bowel screening and other age-appropriate checks.
🚶 Get moving again – longer, warmer days are a great opportunity to gradually increase walking and outdoor activity.
🥗 Refresh your diet – enjoy plenty of seasonal vegetables, fruit, whole grains and healthy sources of protein.
☀️ Remember sun protection – UV levels can rise quickly even when the weather still feels cool
And if winter has left you with a persistent cough, fatigue, recurrent infections or worsening asthma, consider speaking with your GP.
