Some products in a pharmacy carry age restrictions, and they're not always the ones you'd expect. Ni****ne replacement, emergency contraceptives, pseudoephedrine-based cold and flu tablets. If we ask a few extra questions, it's not to embarrass you, it's because some of these carry real risk for younger people.

Our job is making sure the right thing goes home with the right person. Sometimes that's a few more questions. Sometimes it's asking someone to come back with a parent. Either way, we're happy to help.

Fibre every single day. Oats, legumes, vegetables, that's what good bacteria feed on. A probiotic won't work if the fibre isn't there in your diet first.

The key word is consistently. Taking vitamin C on a daily basis is what actually helps. If you already feel a cold coming on, a higher dose for a short period can still help reduce the severity and length of it. One of the biggest misconceptions though is that more is always better. Vitamin C is water soluble, so there's only so much your body can use before the rest is simply flushed out.

The maximum safe daily amount for a healthy adult is 4 grams, which is eight standard 500mg tablets in 24 hours. Go past that and your liver hits a breaking point where it simply can't process it fast enough, and damage happens faster than most people realise. If you drink alcohol regularly, that safe threshold is even lower. Check the ingredients across everything you're taking. A lot of cold and flu combos already contain paracetamol, so it's easy to double dose without realising.

"Is this covered by PBS?" General patients pay up to $25 per script. Concession cardholders pay $7.70. And there's something called the Safety Net that most people have never heard of. Once you've spent enough on prescriptions across the calendar year, your medications become free or heavily discounted for the rest of that year. If you're on multiple regular medications and you're not registered, you're probably paying more than you need to. Come in and we'll sort it out.
