Agriculture remains Australia's second deadliest industry, with an average of 40 workers losing their lives on the job each year. This National Farm Safety Week (19–25 July), the AIHS is calling on farmers and WHS professionals to work together under the theme "Set the Standard: Show 'em How It's Done."

AIHS CEO Julia Whitford and Board member Professor Marcus Cattani share practical, low-cost steps any workplace can take to start identifying and fixing safety risks.

Day 3 wrap-up.

From hot laps at The Bend on Day 1, to The Great Debate closing out Day 2, to everything that followed - three days of great speakers, big conversations, and the kind of energy you only get when the profession comes together.

Day 2 is a wrap!

It was a brilliant day - great speakers, great energy, and plenty of ideas worth taking back to the workplace.

The day wrapped up with A Taste of South Australia, a fantastic evening sponsored by HCX Safety Group - good food, local produce, and great conversation to round things off.

This National Volunteer Week, the AIHS is reminding organisations to consider how they support those who give their time, and to ensure volunteers are properly protected in their roles.

The Institute also acknowledges the many volunteers who support the work of the AIHS across the country, contributing their time and expertise through our Board of Directors, committees, branches, research groups and working groups.

The Institute always remembers that everything we do is built on many years of contribution from so many people, and we sincerely thank all those who continue to support our work.

The AIHS welcomes the Australian Government’s 2026–27 Federal Budget commitment to support free public read-only access to mandatory Australian Standards.

After years of advocacy, this is an important step toward reducing unnecessary barriers to the requirements that underpin safe work, and supporting clearer understanding for businesses and workplace health and safety professionals.

Today, the AIHS acknowledges International Nurses Day and recognises the skill, care and contribution of nurses across Australia. But recognition alone is not enough.

Protecting those who care for our communities requires sustained attention to safer systems of work, appropriate staffing, strong leadership, and the prevention of violence, aggression and psychosocial harm before it occurs.

Safe healthcare cannot be separated from safe work for the people delivering it.

Nurses and care providers are among the most at risk workers in Australia and on International Nurses Day (12 May) there are calls to better protect healthcare workers from violence, abuse and preventable injury.

AIHS Chair Celia Antonovsky was featured on SBS News as part of national coverage marking Workers’ Memorial Day, reinforcing the importance of treating psychosocial hazards with the same urgency as physical risks in workplace health and safety.

This formed part of SBS’s broader coverage reflecting on those who have lost their lives because of work and the continued need to strengthen prevention across both physical and psychosocial risks.

Today, the AIHS joined the Workers’ Memorial Day service in Victoria to honour those who have lost their lives because of workplace injury, illness and disease, and to stand alongside families, colleagues and the broader community in remembrance.

Every workplace death is one too many.
