Developing a skill to automaticity or fluency improves performance and this is widely understood and known for sport and music but not always realized as a reason why doing schoolwork or listening and following instructions in class could be a struggle!

As if handwriting and typing is hard work, there can be less 'brain space' left for learning.

When every letter takes effort, children have to focus so much on what they are doing with their hands, as it isn't yet automatic and they can't rely on 'muscle memory' so they have less capacity left to think about and process and plan their ideas, notice grammar and punctuation, remember spelling, or what the teacher is saying.

Many people will refer to an OT to recommend typing for an exam or assessment etc because handwriting is a struggle, but actually when neither skill is automatic, the student will still struggle!

Did you know pencils power your brain for learning?"

The humble ol' pencil is more powerful for learning than a keyboard - handwriting can ‘light up’ more of a child’s brain than typing!!

When children write by hand, brain imaging studies show that multiple areas of the brain become active in ways for learning and memory that they simply don’t with typing.

Producing letters by hand helps build the neural pathways needed for recognising letters, reading words, and spelling.

Handwriting is not “old-fashioned” nor a ''lost art' nor 'to be replaced with keyboarding for learning' - it is a foundational learning tool and should complement keyboarding in today's modern classrooms!
