Psychology for Veterans | Gold Coast

Veterans seek psychological support for many different reasons.

Sometimes these difficulties relate to experiences during military service or the transition to civilian life. At other times, they are the kinds of difficulties that can affect any of us – anxiety, low mood, stress, relationships, sleep, grief, health concerns or changes in life.

Hennessy Clinical Psychology provides individualised psychological therapy for veterans from Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.

Complex PTSD can affect more than memories of what happened.

It can also affect how someone manages strong emotions, sees themselves, experiences trust and navigates relationships.

Psychological therapy can provide a place to understand these patterns and work with them gradually. Treatment does not need to begin with immediately discussing every traumatic experience. It can be paced according to the individual, their circumstances and their readiness.

I have added a new page explaining how I approach psychological therapy for Complex PTSD.

In-person appointments are available in Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast, with telehealth available across Australia.

The Mental Health Benefits of Nature

By David Hennessy, Clinical Psychologist, Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast, QLD

Evidence consistently shows that spending time in nature supports mental health by reducing stress, supporting emotional regulation, and helping the nervous system settle.

Intentional engagement matters.
Listening to nature, observing natural environments, and noticing physical sensations can all contribute to psychological wellbeing.

OCD Therapy Varsity Lakes
By David Hennessy, Clinical Psychologist, Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast, QLD

OCD often follows a predictable pattern. A thought appears, anxiety rises, and a behaviour or mental ritual reduces the discomfort for a short time.

Over time, this can strengthen the cycle and make the thoughts feel more important or threatening.

Evidence-based therapy focuses on gradually changing this pattern. Instead of responding with a ritual, people learn to allow the anxiety to rise and fall on its own.

This shift takes practice, although many people find it leads to meaningful change.

Psychology and Chronic Pain
By David Hennessy, Clinical Psychologist, Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast, QLD.
Pain is not only physical
The nervous system plays a role

Chronic pain can affect many areas of life, including sleep, mood, and daily functioning.

Research shows that persistent pain often involves changes in the nervous system. This can increase sensitivity to pain signals over time.

Psychological therapy focuses on helping people understand these processes and respond differently. This may include pacing, nervous system regulation, and gradually returning to meaningful activities.
