The term ‘small business’ has always irked me a little.
It’s a label used by our government bodies including the tax department to define business by numbers -revenue,profit,staff - but it rarely captures the heart of what these businesses really are.
And in this conversation the relevance of independent businesses to regional towns and areas such as ours.
Today over a cafe , I caught up with another independent business owner from the area. .wholefoods - whose allergy friendly cakes and sweet treats are loved across South Gippsland.
We chatted about many things including war wounds from our trades - hers being burns from the oven and mine callouses and ripped skin from stitching.
We also spoke about the realities of independent business: constantly adapting, creating meaningful offerings all the while trying to make a living.
Our conversation touched on businesses including who are currently creating a new model for their undertaking, and also the transformation of the old Cavity into . These are a few examples of locals turning passion, creativity and hard work into something valuable for the community.
Independent businesses contribute far more than products or services.
They create connection, character, and wellbeing within small towns.
Going to a yoga class, buying lunch, or booking a massage is never just a transaction- it’s an investment in the people and energy that keep communities alive.
