Whether your dog is preparing for the ring, competing, or simply needs a little TLC, come and see us for a bodywork session to help keep them comfortable and performing at their best.

✨🐎Hind Foot Angles Matter 🧲✨

Negative plantar angles can cause whole body discomfort, but particularly increase strain through the hind limb; especially the proximal suspensory apparatus, hocks and sacroiliac region, contributing to ongoing discomfort and poor performance.

This horse had been struggling with proximal suspensory desmitis and sacroiliac pain. He received intra-articular hock injections and shockwave therapy on his suspensories as part of his primary treatment, but long term improvement was always going to rely heavily on improving his hind foot balance and addressing his negative plantar angles.

Following shoe removal and corrective trimming, there has already been visible improvement in his hind foot angles, particularly through the coronary band and heel angles which had previously been collapsing.

Often these horses require much shorter shoeing or trimming cycles (every 3–4 weeks), and in some cases, wedges and improved breakover can be incredibly beneficial to help support the hind limb and reduce strain on the suspensory apparatus.

The owner also rides this horse predominantly on grass surfaces rather than grippy fibre arenas, and ices his hinds after work.

A small but vital step in this horse’s recovery, with a very dedicated owner now taking on weekly maintenance trims between farrier visits. 💪🏻

🐴 Could it be Cushing’s? 🍂

Does your horse…
• Struggle to keep weight on? Or gain weight a little too easily?
• Take a long time to heal wounds?
• Have red/bruising in their laminae when they’re being trimmed?
• Have unexplained laminitis?
• Seem a bit “sway-backed” as they get older?
• Hang onto their winter coat longer than everyone else in the paddock?
• Grow an unusually long or thick coat?
• Drink and urinate more than usual?
• Lose topline or muscle despite normal feeding?

If you’re nodding “yes” to any of these, it might be worth considering Cushing’s disease (PPID).🫣

Autumn is the ideal time to test, as hormone levels (ACTH) are naturally more reliable and we can get the most accurate results.🍂

Early diagnosis can make a huge difference in managing your horse’s comfort, health, and risk of laminitis.

If your horse is already diagnosed and on treatment, I also recommend annual testing.
PPID is a progressive condition and over time medication doses often need adjusting to keep clinical signs well controlled. 🩺 💉

📸 Pictured is the lovely Marlin, whose owners noticed him struggling to keep weight on (usually a good diet), quieter in himself and drinking a little more. He tested positive for Cushings and within weeks of starting him on Pergolide tablets, he started to glow again and his cheeky personality came back! ✨
