When it comes to an AED (Defib), understanding the two main types is essential. As an example, the HeartSine 350P on the left is a semi-automatic defibrillator. It requires the user to press a button to deliver a shock to the patient. On the right, the HeartSine 360P is fully automatic and it automatically delivers a shock if necessary, without the need for user intervention.

Both devices are designed to be user-friendly and crucial in emergency situations, but knowing their differences can help you respond more effectively when every second counts.

A question that gets asked every so often is: "Is there ever a time to not use a defib?". The short answer is no. If someone is unresponsive and not breathing, there is no reason to hesitate in using a defibrillator. It’s a simple device that can make a life-saving difference immediately, so use it without delay.

Hi!
I'm Deb, a trainer and assessor at H&A Training.

I'm a firm believer that kids know and are capable of so much more than adults give them credit for.

I think it's so important that kids know that they can help someone, including an adult, in a first aid situation.

They might not be able to perform CPR or manage if there's lots of blood for example but they can call 000, get adult help and comfort someone.

I'm all for making the most of teaching situations.

Today was one of them.

I was at a park with two of my grandkids, 6 and 10. After playing for a couple of hours we went to the toilet on the way to the car. In the undercover area at the toilets, there was an AED.

Great opportunity to talk about when to get a defibrillator and how to use it.
So we read the information on the box, what letters to look for (AED) and what pictures to look for (❤️⚡).

I had a course this evening so had my work car. I got my training AED out and they learnt how to use it.

They listened to what it was telling them and the eldest put the pads (Velcro) onto the youngest.

When it came time to push the flashing beeping button to deliver a shock (remember it was a training defib) there was a bit of hesitation 'cause they weren't convinced it wouldn't shock lol.

We talked about what number to call in an emergency. Teach the young people in your life how and when to call 000 and how to use a locked mobile phone to do so.

I love teaching kids of all ages about first aid 😊
