If your diagnosed as being dyslexic it is important to try and find the cause.
Sometimes the cause is Visual Processing Disorder which can make the words appear to move, blur, glow, swirl or double, or can even make white paper extremely hard to look at concentrate on.
If this sounds like you.... maybe it's Irlen Syndrome and a set of specifically tinted lenses might be the answer to better reading.

Many people DO NOT like fluorescent lighting because it seems to agitate them and can also cause light-induced headaches and migraines, dizziness, nausea and fatigue. Often, they don't know WHY they don't like fluorescents, but there is a scientific reason. They have a different light spectrum to sunlight. Our eyes evolved in sunlight, but they have not evolved to artificial light. The image shown is the normal spectrum of visible light. The link below will take you to an image comparing normal light to artificial light. Spectral filters worn as glasses "normalise" the spectrum so the brain is not disturbed by the peaks of particular "colours" seen in artificial lights. This is why people comment that they suddenly feel relaxed when they wear their Irlen glasses.

**📚 NAPLAN Results Are In… But Do They Tell the Whole Story?**

If your child scored in the lower NAPLAN bands—especially for **reading, comprehension or spelling**—yet you know they are bright, curious and capable, it may be worth looking beyond the test results.

Likewise, if your child achieved **strong Maths results but much lower English or reading scores**, this pattern can sometimes be associated with **Irlen Syndrome (also called Visual Stress)**. Irlen Syndrome is described as a visual processing difficulty that can make reading uncomfortable or inefficient, affecting fluency and comprehension for some people. It is not a measure of intelligence.

Some children with Irlen Syndrome may experience:

* Difficulty reading despite good intelligence
* Poor reading comprehension
* Losing their place while reading
* Words appearing to move, blur or distort
* Light sensitivity
* Headaches or tired eyes when reading
* Avoidance of reading or homework

Every child who struggles with reading will have different reasons for those difficulties, and Irlen Syndrome is **one possible explanation**, not the only one. If your child has ongoing reading challenges, a comprehensive assessment can help identify what support may be most beneficial.
