Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the most misunderstood conditions we encounter and one of the most important to catch early. ๐ฆด
It's not the same as "getting older" arthritis. It's an autoimmune condition, meaning your immune system is attacking your own joint tissue and it can affect far more than just your joints. Fatigue that rest doesn't fix. Eyes that are constantly dry and inflamed. A general sense of being unwell that's hard to explain. These are all part of the RA picture that often gets missed or dismissed for months before a diagnosis is made.
The joint symptoms themselves are distinctive if you know what to look for. Symmetrical swelling, warmth and tenderness, and that hallmark morning stiffness that takes more than an hour to ease. It typically starts in the small joints of the hands and feet before spreading to larger joints over time.
What concerns us most clinically is how often people sit with these symptoms for months, sometimes years, putting them down to stress, overuse or just "getting older" before getting properly assessed. Early diagnosis and early treatment with a rheumatologist genuinely changes long-term outcomes. It's not something to wait on.
Osteopathy won't cure RA but it has a meaningful role to play in managing it. Keeping joints mobile, maintaining strength, reducing compensatory pain patterns, and helping people stay as active and functional as possible between flares. We work as part of your broader care team, not in isolation.
