A new partnership for women experiencing housing insecurity

Last Wednesday, we came together with our partWollongong Homeless Hub officially launch an important new partnership supporting women experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.

Funded through Bendigo Bank Oak Flats this partnership creates a new pathway for women supported by the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre to access transitional accommodation, alongside the specialist casework and support they need to work towards long-term housing stability.

We know that for many women, homelessness can be hidden, from couch surfing and sleeping in cars to staying in unsafe situations because there is nowhere else to go.

By working together, we can help connect women with a safe place to stay, practical support and, most importantly, hope for a more secure future.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the launch and to our partners for helping make this important initiative possible.

Thank you Anna Watson MP - Member for Shellharbour for the visit today!

It was great to catch up with Tonina Harvey, Acting General Manager of the Illawarra Women's Health Centre, this afternoon to hear more about the important work the Centre continues to deliver for women and girls across our region.

The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre provides free, low-cost and affordable medical, allied and complementary health care, alongside a range of health and wellbeing programs, groups and education.

As a not-for-profit and non-government organisation, the Centre provides a safe and supportive environment where women can access the care, information and services they need.

Thank you to Tonina and the entire team at the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre for the work you do to support the health, safety and wellbeing of women in our community.

OUTREACH SERVICES AT ILLAWARRA WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTRE

We’re pleased to offer a range of free outreach services at the Centre to help women access practical support, information and referrals.

SASSI – Monday 31 August
SASSI provides housing support, including help with housing forms, housing and rental information, applications and direct referrals.
No appointment required.

VINNIES VAN – Thursdays
The Vinnies Van visits the Centre every week, providing meals and snacks, blankets, toiletries, hot beverages and, most importantly, companionship and referrals.

CENTRELINK – Mondays
Need help with Centrelink or information about support you may be eligible for? Book in to meet with a Community Engagement Officer from Services Australia.

MENOPAUSE WORKSHOP

In conjunction with World Menopause Day, we’re excited to be working with Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District and our own Clinical Nurse Edith to bring you a free Menopause Workshop focused on information, support and connection.

Join us for an informative evening covering:
Sleeping, healthy diet and physical activity
A Q&A session where you can ask your menopause questions
Relaxation activities
Herbal tea station

Our health professionals will provide practical information and answer your questions in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Whether you’re experiencing menopause, approaching it, or simply want to learn more, come along and connect with other women while learning more about your health and wellbeing.

Violence against women isn't an issue we can leave to police, courts or frontline services to solve.

Prevention starts much earlier, in our homes, workplaces, schools, sporting clubs and communities.

With rates of domestic violence-related and sexual assault rising in the Illawarra, we all have a role in changing the attitudes and behaviours that allow violence to continue.
