What is a Baker’s cyst (and how physio can help)?

A Baker’s cyst — also called a popliteal cyst — is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee. It commonly develops when excess joint fluid is pushed into a pouch at the back of the knee, often linked to arthritis, meniscus tears or knee inflammation.

Symptoms can include a visible/firm lump behind the knee, tightness, stiffness, aching or difficulty bending the knee.

Sometimes pain increases with activity; rarely the cyst can rupture and cause sudden calf pain and swelling.

How Warners Bay Physiotherapy can help:
-Assessment: thorough knee exam to identify underlying causes (joint mechanics, muscle strength, movement patterns).
-Pain and swelling control: manual therapy, taping, compression and guided activity modification.
-Strength and stability: tailored exercises to strengthen quadriceps, hamstrings, hip and calf muscles to unload the knee and reduce fluid production.
-Mobility and load management: restore knee range of motion and correct movement patterns to reduce joint irritation.
-Education: advice on activity progression, footwear, pacing and self-management strategies (ice, compression, safe exercise).
-Coordinate care: liaise with your GP or orthopaedic team if imaging, injection or referral is needed.

When to see us:
If you have swelling or pain behind the knee, limited bending, or recurring symptoms that affect daily life or sport, book an assessment. Early physio can reduce symptoms and address the root cause.

🦶 Achilles Tendon Pain? We Can Help!

Achilles tendonitis is a common condition that causes pain and stiffness in the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel.
It often develops from overuse, increased activity, or sporting demands.

At Warners Bay Physiotherapy, we use a combination of evidence-based treatments to help reduce pain and promote healing, including:
✔ Shockwave Therapy to stimulate tissue repair
✔ Dry Needling to reduce calf muscle tension
✔ Soft Tissue Therapy to improve flexibility and movement
✔ Individualised Rehabilitation Programs to strengthen the tendon and stimulate collagen formation for long-term recovery

If Achilles pain is stopping you from walking, running, or enjoying your favourite activities, don't ignore it.

Sacroiliitis — inflammation of one or both sacroiliac (SI) joints at the base of the spine — can cause low back, buttock or groin pain, stiffness and pain with standing, walking or twisting. It’s often linked to injury, uneven leg length, pregnancy, inflammatory conditions or mechanical stress 🥹

At Warners Bay Physiotherapy we commonly use a combination of treatments to reduce pain and restore function:
1. Assessment: movement, posture and joint testing to identify pain drivers and muscle imbalances
2. Pain relief & tissue recovery: dry needling for tight muscles, shockwave therapy for soft-tissue healing, and gentle SIJ -lumbopelvic joint mobilisation
3. Rehab & retraining: motor control retraining (transverse abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor), progressive glute/hip/core strengthening, flexibility and neural mobility work, plus functional training for posture and gait
4. Self-management: education, pacing, activity modification and a tailored home exercise program

If SI-region pain is limiting your day-to-day or sport, book an assessment with our team and we’ll design a personalised treatment plan to get you moving comfortably again. 😃

Got hip pain bothering you around the outer hip or thigh? It could be hip bursitis — inflammation of the small, cushioning sacs (bursae) that sit over the hip joint.

Common signs include sharp or aching pain when walking, climbing stairs, lying on the affected side, or getting up from a chair.

At Warners Bay Physiotherapy we treat hip bursitis with a targeted, evidence-based approach:

1. Assessment: thorough movement and strength testing to confirm the cause of pain and rule out other issues.
2. Pain relief and inflammation control: activity modification, manual therapy and tailored load management to ease symptoms.
3. Dry needling: precise needling to reduce local muscle tension and pain, improve tissue mobility and support recovery.
4. Shockwave therapy: focused acoustic waves to speed healing in stubborn cases and reduce pain and inflammation.
5. Rehab exercises: progressive strength, flexibility and motor-control exercises to correct muscle imbalances, improve hip mechanics and prevent recurrence.

Recovery timeline varies, but many people see meaningful improvement with combined treatment and home exercise within weeks.

If you’re experiencing lateral hip pain or suspect bursitis, book an assessment with our team and we’ll create a personalised plan to get you moving comfortably again.

Ankle sprain? Don’t let it slow you down — we can help. 🦶✨

Ankle sprains are common: pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty weight-bearing are typical signs. Left untreated, they can lead to ongoing instability, reduced activity and repeat injuries.

How Warners Bay Physiotherapy can help:
1. Early assessment to grade the sprain and rule out fractures
2. Acute management: protection, load advice, swelling control and pain relief
3. Guided rehab: progressive range-of-motion, strengthening and balance exercises
4. Return-to-activity planning and injury prevention strategies (taping/strapping, footwear advice)
5. Hands-on treatment and tailored exercise programs to restore confidence and function

If your ankle is painful, unstable or not improving after a few days, book an assessment — early physio speeds recovery and reduces re-injury risk. Call us or message to arrange an appointment 📲📞
