2 SERIOUS DIAGNOSES THAT COULD HAVE PROVED FATAL IF NOT ADDRESSED.
Today we have some answers for my kiddo.
In 4 weeks: 5 emergency admissions, 6 separate blood draws, 1 hospital stay , 4 Litres of IV hydration.
5 CT/ MRI/ Nuclear med scans. 2 abdominal xrays. 1 chest x-ray.
1 endocrinology consult, 1 upper GI specialist referral, 1 lower GI specialist referral, 1 immunology referral, 1 dietician referral,
All urgent.
All had to be negotiated gently with our PDAer. Getting the scans DONE were the important part.
And I as the parent of a PDAer and registered nurse, helped him get understood by all the professionals.
An understanding that at ANY TIME their PDA meant they could 'usain bolt' out of the door, hurt themselves, trash the place or attack the medical staff.
And, I ensured that they were listening & understanding of when my kid said "I want to go to hospital- I feel like dying" that means they're feeling REALLY SICK.
They're not putting it on, making it up, or trying to get attention.
Listen to your child. I took a picture of my kiddo to show the doctors just how sick he looked. And they were all shocked. Pictures tell a 1000 words.
You need to advocate HARD to get the advice you need to get 'closer to' a diagnosis.
I knew how to push for certain things. Quicker referrals, quicker scans that were marked urgent but they couldn't do it for another 2 weeks despite my kiddo not being able to eat.
I pushed for quicker action, for looking at the not so obvious things rather than accepting 'it's probably just constipation' There's so much more I can't put into words right now!
